In an industry where box office numbers often define success, stories of accountability are rare. However, Akshay Kumar once proved why he is considered one of Bollywood’s most professional stars.
Recently, at the trailer launch of Bhooth Bangla, producer Ekta Kapoor shared a surprising anecdote. She revealed that Akshay returned his payment after one of their films failed at the box office — and notably, he did so without being asked.
A Rare Gesture That Left Everyone Surprised
During the event, Ekta Kapoor recalled the moment that left her stunned. According to her, Akshay casually handed over the cheque after learning that the film had incurred losses.
“Not many people know this about him. Once, he returned the cheque saying, ‘You have lost money because of this film.’ I was in shock. Nobody does this. I have been in the industry for 31 years, and I haven’t seen anyone doing that,” she shared.
Moreover, Kapoor explained that Akshay didn’t make a big deal out of it. Instead, he simply handed over the cheque and asked her to take it. This gesture reflected his sense of responsibility toward producers and filmmaking as a whole.
The Film That Didn’t Meet Expectations
The film in question was Once Upon a Time in Mumbaai Dobaara! (2013). It was directed by Milan Luthria and produced by Ekta Kapoor along with Shobha Kapoor.
Although the movie carried the weight of being a sequel to a successful film, it failed to perform well at the box office. As a result, Akshay Kumar took the unexpected step of returning his fee.
Ekta Kapoor Refused the Money — And Offered Another Deal
However, Ekta Kapoor chose not to accept the returned payment. Instead, she proposed an alternative arrangement.
She recalled telling him, “No, do one film for me. I will earn a lot if you work in another film with me.”
Eventually, that conversation led to their reunion for Bhooth Bangla, making the story even more meaningful.
Akshay Kumar’s Reputation for Professionalism
Notably, this incident once again highlights Akshay Kumar’s strong work ethic. The actor is widely known for his discipline, punctuality, and commitment to filmmaking.
Furthermore, he often prioritizes the overall success of a project rather than focusing solely on personal gain. Because of this, he continues to maintain his reputation as one of the most dependable stars in the industry.
‘Bhooth Bangla’ Reunites Popular Collaborators
Meanwhile, Bhooth Bangla also marks Akshay Kumar’s reunion with filmmaker Priyadarshan. In addition, the film brings together fan-favourite collaborators like Paresh Rawal, Rajpal Yadav, and veteran actor Asrani.
Alongside them, the film also stars Tabu and Wamiqa Gabbi in key roles.
The much-anticipated horror-comedy is scheduled to release on April 16, 2026.
A Story That Still Stands Out
Ultimately, in an industry where profits often come first, Akshay Kumar’s gesture continues to stand out. His decision to return the cheque remains one of Bollywood’s rare examples of accountability, professionalism, and respect for producers.
