Before there were heroes, there was Rama.
This powerful line sets the tone for the first glimpse of Ramayana, the ambitious two-part cinematic franchise produced by Namit Malhotra and directed by Nitesh Tiwari.
The makers have officially unveiled Ranbir Kapoor as Lord Rama, creating excitement among audiences worldwide. As a result, the film has quickly become one of the most anticipated projects in Indian cinema.
Produced by Prime Focus Studios in association with DNEG and Monster Mind Creations, Ramayana is being positioned as a global cinematic spectacle.
A Global Reveal for a Timeless Hero
The teaser introducing Rama was unveiled worldwide. Consequently, it brought attention to a character whose story has endured for over 5,000 years.
For many viewers, the glimpse offers a fresh take on a familiar epic. Meanwhile, for global audiences, it presents an opportunity to experience the story at an unprecedented scale.
Moreover, the film aims to reintroduce Rama as a timeless hero — one defined not by conquest, but by duty, sacrifice, and compassion.
A Hero Defined by Duty and Sacrifice
Rama, revered as Maryada Purushottama, represents the highest ideals of human conduct. He chooses duty over desire. He walks away from power when necessary. Most importantly, he stands for truth, even in the face of exile and loss.
Director Nitesh Tiwari shared his vision:
“Ramayana’s greatness lies in its emotional richness. It is about choices, consequences, and doing what is right. Rama’s journey is deeply human, and that is what we stayed true to.”
Meanwhile, Ranbir Kapoor described playing Rama as a deeply humbling experience:
“I don’t think I’m here to represent Rama. I’m here to learn from him. There is a simplicity and purity to him that is very rare.”
Producer Namit Malhotra also highlighted the character’s timeless relevance:
“The power of Rama’s story lies not in what he conquers, but in what he lets go of. He chooses duty over desire and sacrifice over self.”
Epic Story: Destiny and the Battle Against Ravana
The film draws inspiration from ancient mythology. Initially, the Trinity Gods — Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva — maintain balance across the universe. However, when chaos rises, Vishnu descends to Earth as Rama.
Ranbir Kapoor plays Rama, a prince destined to restore balance. Opposing him is the powerful demon king Ravana, portrayed by Yash.
The film also features a strong ensemble cast:
- Sai Pallavi as Sita
- Sunny Deol as Hanuman
- Ravie Dubey as Lakshman
Furthermore, the story follows Rama’s exile, his journey of dharma, and the ultimate clash with Ravana — a battle that will decide the fate of gods and mortals.
A Global Collaboration of Talent
Ramayana brings together leading talent from India and Hollywood. The screenplay is adapted by Shridhar Raghavan.
Additionally, Oscar-winning composers Hans Zimmer and A. R. Rahman have created the music.
Production design is led by Ravi Bansal and Ramsey Avery. Meanwhile, action is handled by Hollywood stunt directors Terry Notary and Guy Norris.
Notably, the film is also being shot for IMAX, enhancing its cinematic scale even further.
A Story That Continues to Inspire
The Ramayana remains a powerful cultural narrative. Rama’s return to Ayodhya after victory is celebrated as Diwali, symbolising the triumph of good over evil.
Therefore, the film aims to capture these timeless values. Rama represents humility and sacrifice. In contrast, Ravana symbolizes pride and ambition. This contrast continues to resonate across generations.
