Roop Durgapal Says Reinvention Is About Evolving as an Artist and a Person

Mumbai, India: Roop Durgapal, best known for her role in Balika Vadhu, believes that reinvention in the entertainment industry goes beyond staying relevant. Instead, she says it is equally about growing as a person and evolving as an artist.

Following her OTT debut with Sankalp, the actress reflected on her journey and spoke about adapting to an industry that is constantly changing.

Reinvention Begins with Self-Discovery

To begin with, Roop emphasized that reinvention starts from within. According to her, personal growth directly influences an actor’s performance.

“Reinventing yourself starts with rediscovering yourself as an artist and as a person. Our performances reflect who we are as individuals,” she shared.

Moreover, she explained that experiences, values, and ethics naturally shape creative work. Therefore, continuous learning becomes essential.

“As we continue to grow and learn new skills, that growth reflects in our work. It’s not just about staying relevant for the audience; it’s also about evolving for your own growth,” she added.

Growth Without Losing Your Identity

At the same time, Roop clarified that reinvention does not mean losing one’s core identity. Instead, she believes in staying grounded while evolving.

“I wouldn’t call it completely reinventing myself. Your core identity should remain intact. However, there are moments that push you to reflect and realign yourself,” she explained.

The Pandemic as a Turning Point

Furthermore, the actress revealed that the COVID-19 pandemic became a major turning point in her life. Like many others, she began reassessing her goals and aspirations during that period.

“During that time, many people started thinking deeply about their lives — what they want to do and what needs to change. Sometimes, when you don’t get creatively satisfying opportunities, you start working harder on your craft and learning new skills,” she said.

Reinvention Reflects in Work

Additionally, Roop believes that reinvention is more about rediscovery than transformation. She noted that personal growth naturally reflects in on-screen performances.

“When you grow as a person, that change reflects in your work. You cannot drastically change your on-screen image while remaining the same off-screen. Both go hand in hand,” she explained.

She also mentioned that audience perception gradually evolves as actors gain new experiences and broaden their perspectives.

Breaking Stereotypes Is Challenging

Meanwhile, Roop acknowledged that being associated with a particular image is both rewarding and challenging. She considers audience attachment to an actor’s image as a compliment.

“It means you’ve done your work so well that people remember you. Unless a performance truly touches audiences, it’s difficult for them to even remember an actor,” she said.

However, she also pointed out that breaking stereotypes takes time and the right opportunities.

“If you’re a good actor, you can step into different roles. Every challenge brings growth, and with time and the right opportunities, actors can definitely break those molds,” she added.

Staying Rooted in Changing Times

Finally, Roop stressed that staying grounded is crucial as the entertainment industry continues to evolve rapidly.

“Every individual operates with certain values and boundaries. If you stay true to your principles, it becomes easier to adapt without losing yourself. Reinvention should never mean losing your core identity,” she concluded.
