Mel Brooks is still going strong at 99 years old. The famous director, who made classic movies like Blazing Saddles and Young Frankenstein, works with Josh Gad again. This time, Gad is the director and co-writer with Brooks. Gad, who had just had success in Wolf Like Me and voiced characters in Disney’s Frozen, announced the greenlight last month at Mel Brooks’ Hollywood Walk of Fame ceremony.Gad told the crowd, “Mel is a comedy god, and Spaceballs was ahead of its time.” “This sequel will make fun of the biggest sci-fi movies of today, like Star Wars, Marvel, and everything else.Brooks agreed with the excitement and joked, “We’re making *Spaceballs 2: The Search for More Money!” This was a reference to the original’s famous Schwartz-powered humor.
Production will start soon at Amazon MGM Studios. The first movie made $38 million at the box office, even though it had a small budget. There will be nods to Rick Moranis’ Dark Helmet and Daphne Zuniga’s Princess Vespa, but we don’t know who will be in the movie yet.
