Get ready for 24 Jump Street! The beloved trio may return for another action-comedy adventure after years of anticipation.
After years of delays, Sony’s long-awaited Jump Street sequel is finally gaining momentum. Sources say Jonah Hill, Channing Tatum and Ice Cube are in active talks to return for 24 Jump Street, the next installment in the hit action-comedy franchise.
The film would reunite the trio who turned 21 Jump Street and 22 Jump Street into box-office hits in 2012 and 2014. Although the sequel spent years in development, the latest update suggests the undercover cops may soon return for another mission.
Rodney Rothman, who co-wrote 22 Jump Street and co-directed the Oscar-winning Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, will direct the film. He is also expected to co-write the script with Hill and screenwriter Meghan Malloy.
Meanwhile, original directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller will remain involved as producers alongside longtime franchise producer Neal H. Moritz. Their continued involvement should help preserve the tone and humor that made the first two films successful.
The road to 24 Jump Street has been far from smooth. At one point, Sony developed a crossover with the Men in Black franchise, known as MiB 23. However, the studio eventually shelved the project after facing creative and logistical challenges.
Even so, interest in another sequel never disappeared. Tatum previously called an earlier draft one of the best sequel scripts he had ever read. Both he and Hill have also repeatedly expressed interest in returning. However, industry and financial hurdles kept the project from moving forward.
The new title continues the franchise’s tradition of skipping numbers for comedic effect. By jumping directly to 24 Jump Street, the filmmakers lean into the self-aware humor that defined the series. Fans may remember that 22 Jump Street even teased the title during its end-credits sequence.
Sony has not announced a release date. Still, this marks the strongest progress the sequel has made in years. If the deals close, 24 Jump Street could bring Schmidt, Jenko and Captain Dickson back to theaters more than a decade after their last outing.
