Melbourne, August 2025: Get this – Aamir Khan, yes the Aamir Khan, just hoisted the Indian National Flag at the Indian Film Festival of Melbourne (IFFM) 2025! Talk about a proud moment for Indians everywhere.
Independence Day Gets a Bollywood Touch at IFFM
Every year, IFFM marks India’s Independence Day with a special flag-raising ceremony. It’s a tradition led by the festival’s Chief Guest, and it’s all about celebrating the connection and unity of the Indian community living abroad. In the past, huge stars like Rishi Kapoor, Rani Mukerji, Abhishek Bachchan, and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan have had the honor.
Aamir Khan’s Heartfelt Tribute
This year, it was Aamir Khan – Mr. Perfectionist himself – who did the honors. And it wasn’t just a flag hoisting! He recited Rabindranath Tagore’s famous poem “Where the Mind is Without Fear,” dedicating it to all Indians. It was a really moving moment, celebrating the essence of freedom and the Indian spirit so far from home.
Festival Director’s Take
Mitu Bhowmik Lange, the Festival Director, was clearly thrilled. She said:
“Having Aamir Khan as our Chief Guest is a real privilege. The flag hoisting is something we really treasure at IFFM, as it represents the cultural link between India and Australia. His being here just makes the moment even more significant.”
A World Stage for Cinema
IFFM is running from August 14th to 24th this year, and it’s packed with films, discussions, and cultural events. The festival is a magnet for talented filmmakers, storytellers, and actors from India and all over the globe, turning Melbourne into a real hotspot for cinema and culture.
