Officers attended Widdecombe’s residence after receiving a welfare check request and discovered her with serious injuries. She was pronounced dead at the scene. Her death is being treated as suspicious.
Devon and Cornwall Police said a 26-year-old man from Newton Abbot was arrested on suspicion of murder. He remains in police custody while detectives continue their questioning.
Assistant Chief Constable Matt Longman said there was currently nothing to suggest the incident was connected to terrorism or politically motivated attacks. Forensic teams are examining the property, and officers are gathering witness statements as the inquiry progresses.
Detectives have appealed for information from the public and are reviewing CCTV footage from the area. Police have not yet disclosed a possible motive, with officials stressing the investigation is still in its early stages.
Widdecombe spent over two decades in Parliament as a Conservative MP from 1987 to 2010 and held ministerial positions under John Major. She later became active with the Brexit Party and Reform UK, remaining a vocal figure in British politics.
She was particularly known for her forthright stance on immigration, criminal justice, and social issues.
