Avengers: Endgame Beats Avatar Again at Box Office

Avengers: Endgame is back on top. The 2019 Marvel blockbuster has reclaimed its title as the highest-grossing film of all time.

The comeback comes after a successful theatrical re-release this year. As a result, Endgame has once again moved ahead of James Cameron’s Avatar.

The numbers are incredibly close. Endgame now stands at approximately $2.9255 billion worldwide, while Avatar has reached around $2.9237 billion.

It is a razor-thin difference. However, it marks another major victory for Marvel Studios.

A RIVALRY FOR THE RECORD BOOKS

The battle between Avengers: Endgame and Avatar has become one of Hollywood’s biggest box-office rivalries.

When Endgame arrived in theaters in 2019, it dominated the global market. The superhero epic quickly overtook Avatar and claimed the record.

However, the story did not end there.

Avatar returned to theaters in 2021. The re-release pushed Cameron’s sci-fi blockbuster back to the top.

Now, five years later, Marvel has taken the crown back once again.

THE ‘ENDGAME ENCORE’ CHANGES EVERYTHING

The turning point came with Disney and Marvel’s decision to bring Endgame back to cinemas.

The re-release, titled Avengers: Endgame Encore, generated an estimated $126 million worldwide. That extra revenue was enough to push the film ahead of Avatar.

The comeback started strongly, too. Endgame Encore opened with around $86 million globally.

That total included approximately $26 million from the domestic market and $60 million internationally. For a seven-year-old film, the performance is remarkable.

More importantly, it proves that audiences are still willing to return for major cinematic events.

MORE THAN JUST A SUPERHERO MOVIE

The success of Endgame was not created overnight.

The film represented the culmination of more than a decade of Marvel storytelling. It brought together characters and storylines from 21 previous films.

Furthermore, it marked the conclusion of the MCU’s Infinity Saga.

Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man became one of the franchise’s most recognizable heroes. Chris Evans’ Captain America, Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow, Chris Hemsworth’s Thor and Mark Ruffalo’s Hulk also became global fan favorites.

Therefore, Endgame felt like more than another superhero release. For millions of fans, it was a cultural event.

THE BOX-OFFICE GAP REMAINS TINY

Despite reclaiming the top spot, Endgame does not have a huge lead.

Only a few million dollars separate the Marvel blockbuster from Avatar. Consequently, the record could change hands again.

Avatar previously dominated the worldwide box office for years. Its groundbreaking visual effects and 3D presentation helped turn it into a global phenomenon.

Then, Endgame arrived and changed the rankings.

Now, their rivalry continues. With such a narrow margin, another major theatrical re-release could potentially shift the record once again.

FANS STILL TURN OUT FOR ENDGAME

The success of Avengers: Endgame Encore also highlights the strength of Marvel fandom.

Audiences already know the story. They know the battles. They know the sacrifices. Most importantly, they know how it ends.

Yet, they still returned to theaters.

That response shows the emotional connection audiences have with the MCU. For many fans, watching Endgame on the big screen is an experience worth repeating.

THE PERFECT TIMING FOR MARVEL

The re-release also arrived at an important moment for the franchise.

Marvel is preparing for Avengers: Doomsday, making Endgame Encore more than a nostalgic return.

The film reconnects audiences with the original Avengers era. At the same time, it builds excitement for the franchise’s next major chapter.

The Russo brothers are also returning to direct Doomsday. Therefore, the connection between the two Avengers eras becomes even stronger.

INDIA EMBRACES THE MARVEL COMEBACK

India has also played an important role in the film’s renewed box-office success.

Endgame Encore reportedly crossed ₹30 crore net during its opening week in India. It also became the highest-grossing Hollywood re-release in the Indian market.

That achievement highlights Marvel’s enormous popularity among Indian audiences.

Moreover, it proves that the MCU’s appeal extends far beyond North America. From India to other international markets, fans continue to support the franchise years after its biggest releases.

DISNEY’S BOX-OFFICE DOMINANCE

There is also a bigger story behind this latest record.

Disney now owns seven of the 10 highest-grossing films worldwide. The list includes Avengers: Endgame, Avatar, Avatar: The Way of Water, Titanic and Avengers: Infinity War.

Following Disney’s acquisition of 21st Century Fox, the studio also became home to the Avatar franchise.

As a result, Disney effectively controls both sides of this remarkable box-office rivalry.

Whether audiences choose Marvel superheroes or Pandora’s Na’vi, the studio continues to benefit.

WHY ENDGAME’S RETURN MATTERS

The latest achievement is especially significant in the streaming era.

Today, audiences have more entertainment options than ever. Streaming platforms allow viewers to watch major movies from home soon after their theatrical runs.

Yet, Endgame has shown that audiences will still return to cinemas for something that feels special.

A seven-year-old movie generating major box-office revenue is no ordinary achievement. Instead, it demonstrates the power of nostalgia, fandom and event cinema.

CAN AVATAR TAKE THE CROWN BACK?

The biggest question now is whether Avatar can reclaim the record again.

The gap is small enough to make another comeback possible. Both franchises also have strong global fan bases and a history of successful theatrical re-releases.

For now, however, Marvel has the bragging rights.

Avengers: Endgame has once again assembled its way to the top of the worldwide box office.

And if Hollywood has learned anything from this rivalry, it is that the battle for the box-office crown is never truly over.
