Reality television star-turned-actor Baseer Ali recently sat down for a candid conversation with Mohammed Nagaman Lateef on Honestly, Why Not? With MNL Season 2. During the chat, he spoke about his unconventional career journey, the changing entertainment industry, and why peace now matters more to him than fame.
Known for shows like Roadies, Splitsvilla, and Bigg Boss OTT, Baseer also shared valuable lessons on building a long-lasting career in an increasingly competitive industry.
Talent Should Come Before Popularity
One of the first topics discussed was the growing number of social media influencers entering television.
Rather than criticizing the trend, Baseer offered a balanced perspective. He said he doesn’t believe it’s wrong. However, he feels casting decisions should always prioritize talent over follower count.
According to him, television once enjoyed a unique prestige because it was associated with powerful performances and quality storytelling. Today, however, some projects appear to focus more on social media popularity than acting skills.
“The issue isn’t influencers entering television,” Baseer explained. “The issue is whether the right person is getting the right role.”
Why Peace Matters More Than Fame
The conversation then shifted to what success means to him today.
While Baseer admitted that money is important, he said peace has become his biggest priority. Over the years, his definition of success has changed significantly.
Today, he simply wants to earn well, keep his family happy, and live a peaceful life. Moreover, he believes the experiences and people he encountered in the industry helped him understand exactly what he wants—and what he doesn’t.
Baseer Talks About His Love Life
The interview also touched upon his personal life.
Baseer revealed that he has been single for a long time, even before Bigg Boss OTT. Since then, his busy schedule, constant travel, and acting commitments have left little room for a relationship.
He added that he would never enter a relationship unless he could give his partner the time and commitment they truly deserve.
When asked whether casual relationships are better than love, Baseer admitted his perspective has changed with age. Earlier, he may have chosen differently. Today, however, he values emotional connection far more than temporary attraction.
Consistency Is the Key to Success
Mohammed Nagaman Lateef also praised Baseer for successfully reinventing himself across multiple platforms.
In response, Baseer said long-term consistency matters more than constantly staying in the spotlight.
According to him, one impactful project is far more valuable than several forgettable ones. Audiences remember memorable performances, not just frequent appearances.
Winning Isn’t Everything
Baseer also shared his thoughts on reality shows.
Although he has participated in five reality shows, he won only Splitsvilla. Surprisingly, he considers the other losses to be blessings in disguise.
Those setbacks kept him motivated and hungry to improve. As a result, he never became complacent or satisfied too early in his career.
He also pointed out that winning a reality show doesn’t automatically guarantee a successful future. Instead, staying relevant over the years is what truly matters.
Television vs OTT: Think Before You Switch
The discussion then moved to the growing popularity of OTT platforms.
While Baseer welcomed the rise of digital entertainment, he also advised actors to think carefully before leaving television.
According to him, many actors believe one successful OTT project will completely transform their careers. However, opportunities don’t always arrive quickly. Sometimes, actors spend years waiting while television continues moving forward.
By the time they decide to return, finding another lead role can become much more difficult.
Furthermore, Baseer believes television still enjoys unmatched reach across India. It continues to connect with families in small towns and rural areas where OTT adoption is still growing.
An Unexpected Acting Journey
Looking back, Baseer admitted that becoming an actor was never part of his original plan.
At the age of 21, he auditioned for Roadies without imagining that it would eventually lead him to acting.
Today, he enjoys working across television, web series, and social media. In fact, he believes the current entertainment ecosystem offers creators more opportunities than ever before to grow and connect with audiences.
Competition Has Never Been Tougher
Towards the end of the interview, Baseer reflected on the challenges faced by newcomers.
He noted that every year, countless influencers, reality show contestants, and aspiring actors enter the entertainment industry. Consequently, competition has become far more intense than when he started.
Because of this, surviving in the industry requires consistency, patience, adaptability, and resilience. Despite the challenges, Baseer feels fortunate to have entered the industry at a time when competition was comparatively less fierce.
