Rock legend Billy Idol took the stage at the 2026 American Music Awards on Monday to accept the prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award, using the moment to deliver an inspiring message to aspiring musicians everywhere.
Presented by Leon Thomas, the honor recognized Idol’s decades-spanning influence on rock music and the countless artists he’s inspired throughout his career. But rather than dwell on accolades, Idol focused his acceptance speech on the future generation.
“Pick an instrument,” he urged young music lovers. “Find out who you are and be it.”
Idol thanked the American Music Awards, his devoted fanbase, and longtime collaborator Steve Stevens, crediting them with making his storied career possible. He acknowledged that none of it would have happened without their unwavering support.
The night only got bigger from there. Idol delivered a rousing medley of his biggest hits—”Eyes Without a Face” and “Dancing with Myself” among them—marking his first-ever performance at the AMAs. The set served as a reminder of why he remains a cornerstone of rock history.
The Lifetime Achievement Award places Idol in rarified company, cementing his status as one of the music industry’s most enduring and influential figures.
