Black Panther 3 Is Coming Back, and Ryan Coogler Is in the Director’s Chair

Marvel Studios has officially confirmed Black Panther 3, giving fans the announcement they have been waiting for. The studio revealed during its San Diego Comic-Con 2026 panel that Ryan Coogler will return to write and direct the next chapter of the blockbuster superhero franchise.

The announcement offers fans their first clear look at Wakanda’s future while continuing to honor the legacy of Chadwick Boseman, who led the first two films.

Instead of recasting Boseman’s T’Challa, Marvel has chosen a new direction. David Jonsson will play the adult Prince T’Challa, the son of T’Challa and Nakia. Marvel first introduced the character in the post-credits scene of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.

By passing the mantle to the next generation, Marvel preserves Boseman’s legacy while opening a new chapter for the franchise.

Ryan Coogler earned widespread praise for directing the first two Black Panther films, which achieved both critical acclaim and box-office success. His return signals Marvel’s commitment to the storytelling, cultural authenticity, and cinematic spectacle that made the franchise stand out within the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Marvel also confirmed that Letitia Wright and Winston Duke will reprise their roles as Shuri and M’Baku. The studio further announced that Academy Award winner Denzel Washington will join the cast in a mystery role that Coogler reportedly wrote specifically for him.

Marvel has scheduled Black Panther 3 to premiere in theaters on December 15, 2028.

Although the studio has not revealed the full storyline, the film will likely follow Prince T’Challa’s journey as Wakanda’s next leader, introduce new threats to the kingdom, and further explore the enduring legacy of the Black Panther.
