Quick Summary

Sarah Michelle Gellar reveals Hulu has axed the Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot, New Sunnydale. Fans react to end of Chloé Zhao's project—latest 2026 update.

Hulu was working on the reboot, and Gellar was going to play Buffy Summers again in a recurring role. The project had gotten as far as setting up offices and even filming a pilot with Oscar-winning director Chloé Zhao on board. 20th Television had tried to do it before in 2018, but it didn’t work.

Fans left angry and sad comments on Gellar’s post, and some even joked that they would still “beep” her if the world ended. Hulu has passed on this version, but there are still questions about possible future Buffyverse projects in other places. In her message, Gellar thanked Zhao for working together.
