Fjord Movie Receives Standing Ovation at Cannes

Sebastian Stan and Renate Reinsve couldn’t hold back the emotion Monday night when Cristian Mungiu’s English-language debut Fjord brought the house down at the 2026 Cannes Film Festival. The intense family drama earned nearly 10 minutes of applause—the loudest reception any film has gotten at this year’s festival.

A Gut-Wrenching Premiere

The screening at Cannes’ Grand Palais left the audience visibly shaken. Gasps echoed through the theater as the devastating story of the Gheorghiu family unfolded on screen. Some attendees struggled to compose themselves.

Mungiu, the Romanian filmmaker behind the Palme d’Or-winning 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days, delivered a raw emotional punch that clearly resonated with the Cannes crowd. After the lights came up, he addressed the audience in both French and English. He thanked the festival for the overwhelming response.

A Family Pulled Apart

The film follows a Romanian father (Stan) and Norwegian mother (Reinsve) who move to a remote village on Norway’s coast where she was born. What starts as a fresh beginning turns dark when cultural tensions emerge. Local authorities grow suspicious of the family’s strict religious practices, and allegations of abuse surface. This leads officials to remove the children from their care.

The story grapples with trust, identity, and how state power can devastate a family.

An Emotional Moment for the Stars

Both Stan and Reinsve were moved to tears during the standing ovation. This marks their second collaboration after A Different Man.

Coming to Theaters

Neon has snagged the distribution rights for North America, the U.K., Australia, and New Zealand. In addition, a U.S. theatrical release is planned.
