Charlize Theron Still Feels ‘Deep Connection’ to Mad Max a Decade Later

Charlize Theron is reflecting on one of the most demanding and defining roles of her career: playing Imperator Furiosa in Mad Max: Fury Road. More than a decade after filming wrapped and years after the film’s 2015 release, the Oscar-winning actress says she still feels deeply connected to George Miller’s post-apocalyptic action thriller.

Theron shared her memories during a special screening at the Academy Museum, where she appeared ahead of receiving an honor at the Academy Museum Gala. She spoke openly about playing Furiosa, filming in the Namibian desert and the unexpected ways the character has connected with audiences over the years.

Despite the film’s reputation for brutal action sequences and reported on-set tensions, Theron’s fondest memories from production remain deeply personal. Her oldest daughter was just six weeks old when filming began. Without a nanny arranged before the production, Theron relied on her co-stars, including Nicholas Hoult, to help care for her baby during the six-month shoot in Namibia.

Between takes, her daughter spent time around the film’s vehicles and crew. The cast helped feed and care for the infant while Theron worked. Most memorably, her daughter took her first steps on the set of Fury Road a detail that helps explain why Theron still holds the film so close to her heart.

Theron also opened up about the challenge of understanding Furiosa when she first accepted the role. The actress admitted that she did not naturally connect with traditional heroes who simply do the right thing for the right reasons.

To understand Furiosa, Theron reframed her motivation. Instead of viewing her as a straightforward hero, she saw Furiosa as someone driven by a deeply personal desire to take revenge on Immortan Joe. That anger ultimately pushes her to rescue his captive wives.

The approach allowed Theron to build a more complex character, combining anger, selfishness, compassion and determination. Her performance helped turn Furiosa into one of modern cinema’s most memorable female action heroes.

More than a decade later, Theron has seen just how strongly audiences have embraced Furiosa. Fans have approached her with Furiosa tattoos, while some parents have even named their children after the character.

Theron, however, believes Furiosa’s lasting impact goes beyond her own performance. She credits the power of storytelling and art for allowing the character to move beyond the screen and develop a life of her own.

During the conversation, Theron also praised director George Miller and the personal commitment he brought to Fury Road. She described the film as a deeply personal project for the filmmaker and reflected on how unusual it is for an actor to work on a movie so strongly shaped by its director’s creative vision.

The film, which also stars Tom Hardy, became a critical and commercial success. It earned 10 Academy Award nominations and won six Oscars, including awards for film editing, production design, costume design, makeup and hairstyling, and sound.

Theron also delivered one of the most surprising revelations of the evening: she admitted that she had not watched Fury Road in about 13 years.

The admission brought some humor to an otherwise emotional discussion. It also meant that Theron was preparing to experience the acclaimed action film again alongside the Academy Museum audience.

More than a decade after its release, Mad Max: Fury Road remains a landmark action film. For Theron, however, the movie represents much more than spectacular car chases and Furiosa’s cultural legacy.
