Colin Kaepernick Says Jay-Z Has a ‘Guilty Conscience’ Over NFL Partnership

The simmering feud between Jay-Z and Colin Kaepernick has flared up again, with the former NFL quarterback suggesting that the rapper’s repeated public comments about him may signal lingering regret over his controversial deal with the league.

Kaepernick made the remarks during a recent NBC News interview, responding to Jay-Z’s latest jabs at Yankee Stadium. The rapper brought up Kaepernick while defending himself against backlash over his business relationships, particularly his work with the NFL.

During his July concert series at Yankee Stadium, Jay-Z referenced Kaepernick’s 2019 NFL settlement in an improvised rap, claiming the former quarterback had agreed not to speak negatively about the league as part of the agreement.

Kaepernick denies that claim. He insists he never signed any non-disparagement clause when he settled his collusion case with the NFL in 2019. The league has consistently rejected Kaepernick’s allegations that teams coordinated to keep him off the field.

Kaepernick sees significance in Jay-Z continuing to mention him years after his Roc Nation partnership with the NFL went public.

He argues that the criticism Jay-Z faced following the 2019 deal clearly still bothers the rapper. According to Kaepernick, Jay-Z’s ongoing references suggest he’s still trying to reframe public opinion about his corporate tie-ups.

Kaepernick characterized this as a sign of a “guilty conscience,” implying that Jay-Z may be attempting to reshape how people view his business decisions.

The former quarterback also questioned why prominent figures would pursue partnerships with organizations facing criticism for how they’ve treated affected communities.

What makes this dispute especially striking is that Jay-Z and Kaepernick were once public allies fighting for the same causes.

Kaepernick became a household name in 2016 when he knelt during the national anthem to protest racial injustice before NFL games. The act sparked intense national debate and became the central focus of his career.

Jay-Z publicly championed Kaepernick during those early days. The rapper referenced him during a 2017 performance and expressed solidarity with his activism.

That bond fractured after Roc Nation struck its 2019 partnership with the NFL. The deal gave Jay-Z’s company influence over the league’s entertainment direction, including Super Bowl halftime shows and the NFL’s social justice initiative called Inspire Change.

Kaepernick, meanwhile, remained a vocal critic of the NFL and continued his work on social and criminal justice reform outside professional sports.

Though critical of Jay-Z’s approach, Kaepernick said he understands why the rapper feels compelled to defend his reputation.

He suggested Jay-Z is attempting to rehabilitate his public image following the backlash to his corporate partnerships. Still, Kaepernick made clear he disagrees with the strategy.

He also stated he has no intention of responding to every public comment directed at him, saying his work and actions should speak for themselves.

The latest clash also reopens questions about what Kaepernick actually agreed to in his confidential 2019 NFL settlement.

After becoming the face of the anthem protest movement, Kaepernick filed a grievance claiming NFL owners had conspired to blacklist him. He and teammate Eric Reid eventually reached a confidential settlement with the league.

Jay-Z’s recent comments portrayed that settlement differently than Kaepernick’s version. Following Jay-Z’s performance, media outlets also challenged his claim that Kaepernick had agreed to stay silent.

Neither the NFL nor Jay-Z’s representatives have commented publicly on the renewed dispute.

The latest public disagreement underscores just how strained the relationship between these two once-aligned figures has become—and how Kaepernick’s NFL career continues to generate controversy years after his departure from the league.
