Elvin Brandhi, Not Brian Eno, Composed Soundtrack for Beatrice Gibson’s ‘At Night’

Experimental musician Elvin Brandhi has composed the score for British filmmaker Beatrice Gibson’s debut feature ‘At Night’, settling speculation that had previously linked the project to legendary producer Brian Eno.

The film will make its world premiere at the 79th Locarno Film Festival on August 8, 2026, competing in the Filmmakers of the Present section.

For Brandhi the stage name of British musician Freya Edmondes ‘At Night’ marks her feature film scoring debut. Known for crafting experimental soundscapes using field recordings, vocals, and tape and vinyl textures, she brings that signature approach to Gibson’s intimate portrait of urban life in Paris.

The film follows six women through the streets and Paris Metro system as they discuss sexuality, money, motherhood, and mental health while sharing their hopes, fears, and personal experiences.

Rather than functioning as a traditional film score, Brandhi’s music blends seamlessly into the film’s atmosphere. The sounds of Paris proved crucial to the creative process. She traveled to the city during production specifically to record the Paris Metro’s underground rail system, later weaving those recordings into the soundtrack.

The transition to film scoring required Brandhi to fundamentally shift her approach. Her solo work demands immediate listener attention, whereas a film score must work quietly in the background, supporting the narrative without overwhelming it. That delicate balance became central to her work on ‘At Night’, as she shaped the music around the film’s locations, performances, and emotional tone.

Drummer Crystabel Riley contributed percussion to the score while also handling makeup for the production. Editor Liyo Gong, who is also a DJ, brought her understanding of rhythm to connect the film’s editing with Brandhi’s compositions.

Gibson and Brandhi first crossed paths at the Borealis experimental music festival in Bergen, Norway, before a mutual friend later introduced them. They developed an early creative partnership after Brandhi received an early script draft, beginning to develop musical ideas before filming commenced. One early reference point was “Kidney Spears,” a track from her collaboration with Bashar Suleiman under the name Insin.

The experience has sparked Brandhi’s interest in cinema work, with plans to pursue future film projects and expand into video and editing. She is also collaborating with Berlin-based Kenyan musician KMRU on a new project called A|||oy, which explores field recordings, texture, and spatial sound through residencies in Stockholm and Oxfordshire.

With ‘At Night’, Brandhi brings her experimental music sensibility into feature filmmaking, giving Gibson’s Paris-set narrative a distinctive sonic identity and marking a significant new chapter in her career.
