From Delhi to Netflix: Charting Saurabh Monga’s Cinematic Evolution

Transitioning from the vibrant lanes of New Delhi to the magnetic aura of Latin America, Saurabh Monga’s cinematic progression has established him as a globally recognized cinematographer.

With early endeavors like “Agra” paving the way to the Netflix sensation “Kohrra,” Saurabh’s trajectory is a reflection of his relentless passion and evolving artistry. A return to India at 20 ignited his cinematic passion, and by 26, he was in Latin America, refining his skills. Immersed in the diverse cultures of India and the West, he contributed to significant films like “The Gold-Laden Sheep & the Sacred Mountain,” and “Candela.” He also ventured into shorts, with titles like “La Carga” and “El Destetado,” alongside crafting ‘Kohrra’ in India.

Reminiscing, Saurabh noted, “The journey, from ‘Agra’ to ‘Kohrra,’ has been surreal. ‘Agra’s’ Cannes premiere after a long wait was rewarding. ‘Kohrra’ serendipitously came my way. Sudip’s approach was sudden, but within days, I found myself engrossed in the project in Ludhiana. Sudip, Randeep, and I gelled effortlessly.”

Commenting on the comparative cinematic cultures, he mentioned, “Even though preparation emphasis differs between India and the West, I view cinematography as storytelling’s vessel. It’s about the director-cinematographer synergy, which is prevalent in both cultures.”

The acclaim for “Kohrra” from figures like Karan Johar and Mira Nair filled Saurabh with a blend of thrill and gratitude.

On the evolving cinematic scene, he remarked, “The transformation in Indian cinema is thrilling. The appreciation for cinematography’s essence is evident. The broadened focus on aspects like scriptwriting and cinematography in discussions is uplifting.”

Post “Kohrra,” Saurabh’s forthcoming ventures hint at his mastery in weaving narratives that echo globally.
