The Masters and U.S. Open winner Fuzzy Zoeller passed away on November 27, 2025. The USGA confirmed his death and praised his game influence. No cause was announced. Tributes flooded in for the New Albany, Indiana native.
Frank Urban “Fuzzy” Zoeller Jr. was born poor in New Albany. His easygoing style and bold shots made him a fan favorite. He won the 1979 Masters in his Augusta debut. He became the first in decades to claim the green jacket on first try. He added the 1984 U.S. Open via playoff over Greg Norman. He secured 10 PGA Tour titles and a senior major.
Zoeller’s legacy darkened after a 1997 Masters joke about Tiger Woods. He suggested fried chicken and collard greens for champions dinner. It sparked outrage, backlash, and death threats. He apologized later and called it his worst experience.
Off-course, Zoeller shone with humor and fan access. He played multiple Ryder Cups for the U.S. He won the 1985 USGA Bob Jones Award for sportsmanship. He stayed active in course design, outings, and exhibitions. He leaves three children. Wife Diane died in 2021. Condolences pour in worldwide.
