George Clooney, a Hollywood actor, has said in public that it was a “mistake” to replace Joe Biden with Kamala Harris as the Democratic nominee for president in the 2024 election. In a recent interview on CBS’s “Sunday Morning,” Clooney said that he doesn’t regret telling Biden to step down in his July 2024 New York Times op-ed. However, he thinks Harris had a very hard time running against her own record.
Clooney said that Harris’s candidacy was “tough” because she had to separate herself from her past. “It’s very hard to do if the point of running is to say, ‘I’m not that person,'” he said. Clooney still believed that the Democratic Party needed to be honest, even if it meant making hard choices.
The actor’s controversial op-ed came after Biden did poorly in the first presidential debate of 2024 against Donald Trump. Clooney called for a quick primary challenge to “battle-test” the candidates and get the campaign going. He said that the Democrats could lose even more House seats if they didn’t do anything.
Clooney thinks that speaking out is a civic duty, but he knows that Harris’s campaign was politically complicated. In the end, Donald Trump beat President Biden in the November 2024 election. Harris’s plan to replace him became a hot topic of debate.
