The 2026 Global Citizen Festival has been canceled in New York just hours before thousands of fans were expected to gather at Central Park for the annual benefit concert. Organizers made the decision after forecasts warned of a powerful nor’easter bringing dangerous rain and strong winds to the region.
As a result, the highly anticipated event at Central Park’s Great Lawn will not go ahead this year.
Global Citizen Festival Canceled Over Severe Weather
The decision came after organizers consulted with New York City officials and NYC Parks. Following those discussions, they determined that the weather conditions could put fans, performers and production teams at risk.
Moreover, the large-scale concert required thousands of people, along with extensive staging, equipment, vendors and staff. With severe weather approaching, organizers concluded that it would not be possible to safely proceed.
“We explored several alternatives during the week, but ultimately decided we had to cancel,” Global Citizen said in a statement.
Consequently, the 2026 cancellation marks a rare moment for the festival. It is the first time in 14 years that the Global Citizen Festival has been called off.
Star-Studded Lineup Was Set to Perform
Meanwhile, fans were looking forward to a major lineup of international music stars. The scheduled performers included Lauryn Hill and Wyclef Jean, Lenny Kravitz, John Legend, Lainey Wilson, Shaboozey and TXT.
In addition, Hugh Jackman was set to return as host. Television personalities Gayle King and Rachel Brosnahan were also expected to make appearances.
However, the weather forecast ultimately prevented the performances from taking place.
The festival has traditionally combined live music with Global Citizen’s advocacy campaigns. Through these initiatives, the organization has focused on issues including poverty, education and social justice.
Global Citizen Campaign Continues Despite Cancellation
Although the concert was canceled, the organization said its broader campaign still achieved significant results.
Over the six weeks leading up to the festival, supporters took 3.5 million actions. Those efforts helped secure $208.8 million in financial commitments, according to Global Citizen.
Furthermore, the organization said the commitments are expected to benefit more than 9.5 million people worldwide.
The pledged funding will also help more than 2 million children gain access to education and remain in school. At the same time, the campaign will support smallholder farmers, women, youth and Indigenous communities.
Fans to Receive Ticket Refunds
For ticket holders, Global Citizen said refunds will be processed automatically. In addition, donors who purchased tickets can request their money back.
The organization said further information about the refund process will be sent directly to ticket holders by email.
Therefore, fans who were preparing to attend the Central Park event should look out for those updates.
Festival Food to Be Donated
Meanwhile, food prepared for the canceled event will not go to waste.
Instead, Global Citizen plans to donate the food to local organizations supporting communities across New York City. The move will allow prepared meals and other food resources to reach people who need them.
Global Citizen Festival Will Return in 2027
Despite this year’s cancellation, Global Citizen has confirmed that the festival will return to Central Park in 2027.
While the 2026 concert will not take place, the organization stressed that its campaign commitments remain in effect. As a result, Global Citizen’s work on education, poverty and community support will continue beyond the canceled festival.
