NEWSHICHKI

HICHKI

By Arun Sajnani

Hickhi – At first I felt like cracking up and laughing at Rani Mukerji’s stammer, and how it first seemed a bit too much, but then something came over me. A sense of sensitivity came over me and slapped my ignorance away.

As the film “HICHKI” progressed, where she plays a role of a teacher. She is shown as a person who was born with a rare dysfunction, called “Tourettes Syndrome”. It is one of her most challenging roles after “Black”, where she gets to show the nuances of the stammer and hiccups at any given time is simply brilliant. It must have been very taxing on her to shoot and do takes of this character on screen.

Rani as Naina Mathur, finally on her 13th attempt gets a chance to teach 14 students. These students who have come from the slums to get a better education, are kept separated from the other students for their hostile behavior. They are not treated equal in their school. They rebel, and teachers quit on them, but not Rani Mukerji. Like her portrayal as the underdog with deficiencies, she becomes an inspiration to her students.

The film at times reminds you of films like, “Taare Zameen Par”, even from Hollywood like, “To Sir With Love”, and “Dead Poet’s Society”, but with that being said, this film too is uplifting and inspires one to feel compelled to encourage people with such setbacks to go forward in life. The new kids on the block as the students were an added bonus to the film. They were all natural and full of originality.

I rarely say this, but this film was above my expectations, and I urge you all to see this film, especially if you are a parent. The film gets a 4 star recommendation. A Must See!! – Enjoy!! Courtesy Awesome TV & BEING FILMY.
