Korean veteran actor Hwang Jung-min is taking on a physically demanding role in the upcoming sci-fi thriller Hope. Known for his acclaimed performance in Ode to My Father, the actor spends much of the film running. However, he recently revealed that the biggest challenge was not the long shooting days. Instead, it was the Western boots he had to wear.
Hwang enjoys running in his personal life. Therefore, the demanding scenes did not overwhelm him. Nevertheless, his footwear made the experience more complicated than expected.
The film, written and directed by Na Hong-jin, also stars Michael Fassbender, Alicia Vikander and Jung Ho Yeon. It will arrive in Indian theatres on October 23, 2026.
Western Boots Made Running More Difficult
For Hwang, the biggest obstacle came from his character’s footwear. Whenever the camera showed his feet, he had to wear Western boots to maintain visual consistency.
However, running in those boots created discomfort. The actor explained that he had to keep his toes curled while moving, making the sequences more challenging.
Fortunately, the production team found a practical solution. Whenever his feet were outside the frame, Hwang could switch to sneakers and run more comfortably.
Still, changing shoes repeatedly became inconvenient. As filming continued, the boots gradually stretched and fitted his feet better.
Eventually, Hwang decided to keep running in the boots rather than interrupt the shoot to change footwear. What initially seemed like an obstacle became easier to manage with time.
Hwang Jung-min’s Love for Running Helped Him
Despite the physical demands, Hwang handled the running sequences with confidence. His personal interest in running helped him maintain his stamina during long shooting days.
The actor revealed that some scenes required him to run from morning until the end of the day. Even so, he did not feel the need to give up.
“I also enjoy running, and I have never said, ‘It’s too hard, I can’t run anymore,’ so I think I am managing well,” Hwang shared.
His comments highlight the importance of physical preparation for demanding film roles. Moreover, action scenes often require repeated takes, multiple camera angles and adjustments to the director’s vision.
Consequently, even familiar physical activities can become exhausting on a film set. Hwang’s experience with running, however, gave him an advantage and helped him manage the demanding schedule.
Hope Brings Together an International Cast
Beyond Hwang’s physical performance, Hope has attracted attention for its impressive international ensemble. The film stars Michael Fassbender, Alicia Vikander and Jung Ho Yeon alongside the Korean veteran.
The project is written and directed by Na Hong-jin, the filmmaker behind acclaimed films such as The Chaser and The Wailing. His previous work has established his reputation for intense storytelling and unsettling cinematic atmospheres.
Now, he turns his attention to science fiction and action. As a result, audiences are eager to see how he brings his distinctive filmmaking style to this new project.
The combination of Korean talent and internationally recognised actors also gives the film a wider appeal. However, viewers will have to wait for its release to discover how the characters and story unfold.
Hong Kyung-pyo Adds His Cinematic Expertise
Another major creative force behind Hope is cinematographer Hong Kyung-pyo. He is widely recognised for his work on Bong Joon-ho’s Oscar-winning film Parasite.
Cinematography plays an important role in science-fiction films. Through lighting, framing and camera movement, filmmakers can create immersive worlds and heighten tension.
Therefore, Hong’s involvement adds another reason for film enthusiasts to watch Hope. His experience could help shape the visual atmosphere of the ambitious production.
Combined with Na Hong-jin’s direction and the cast’s performances, the cinematography will be an important part of the film’s overall impact.
Star Entertainment Brings Hope to Indian Theatres
Indian audiences will be able to watch Hope in cinemas from October 23, 2026. Star Entertainment will distribute the film across India in English and Hindi.
Established in 1980, Star Entertainment has spent more than four decades distributing international films to Indian audiences. Its catalogue includes titles such as Dirty Dancing, Pan’s Labyrinth and Ip Man.
The company’s experience with international cinema also includes Korean films. Consequently, the release of Hope offers Indian viewers another opportunity to experience a major Korean production on the big screen.
With its science-fiction premise, international cast and experienced creative team, the film is shaping up to be an intriguing theatrical release.
