Jesse Eisenberg Finds Stability in Europe After Becoming Polish Citizen

Academy Award-nominated actor Jesse Eisenberg says his recent decision to become a Polish citizen has fundamentally shifted how he sees the world, offering him what he describes as a greater sense of stability than he currently finds in the United States.

The actor opened up about the decision during the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival, discussing his family’s Polish roots and the emotional journey that led him to seek dual citizenship. President Andrzej Duda granted him Polish citizenship earlier this year, a move inspired largely by Eisenberg’s acclaimed 2024 film ‘A Real Pain’.

“Reconnecting with my family’s history in Poland was one of the most meaningful experiences of my life,” Eisenberg explained. While filming ‘A Real Pain’—which follows two cousins tracing their Jewish heritage through Poland—the actor immersed himself in the country’s culture and history, deepening a personal connection that eventually motivated him to apply for citizenship.

Eisenberg said he increasingly views Europe as a calmer, more secure place than America feels at the moment. Though he stopped short of suggesting he’s abandoning his home country, he acknowledged that Polish citizenship has provided him with a reassuring sense of belonging and possibility.

The actor stressed that his decision was personal rather than political. He has previously expressed hope that his new status might help strengthen ties between Jewish and Polish communities while honoring his family’s legacy.

His comments struck a chord with festival attendees. As Eisenberg continues his work as an actor, screenwriter, and director, he sees his Polish citizenship as far more than paperwork—it represents a bridge between his past and a future rooted in two cultures.
