Director Joachim Rønning is leaving blockbuster franchises behind for something much darker. The filmmaker, known for Tron: Ares and Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, is now developing an original horror film titled System.
Production is already underway in London. Meanwhile, Spooky Pictures and Image Nation Studios are backing the mysterious project.
However, very little is known about the movie. In fact, the filmmakers are keeping both the story and cast tightly under wraps.
A New Direction for Joachim Rønning
Rønning is taking a fresh creative path with System. Instead of returning to an established franchise, he is building a completely original horror story.
The Norwegian filmmaker also has a personal connection to the project. He co-wrote the screenplay with his brother, Andreas Rønning.
Additionally, Rønning is producing the movie through his production banner, The Saga Company. As a result, he is involved in several key stages of the film.
From Blockbusters to Original Horror
Rønning has spent much of his recent career working on major studio productions. His credits include Maleficent: Mistress of Evil, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales and Tron: Ares.
Now, however, System offers something very different. Rather than expanding an existing universe, Rønning gets the opportunity to create his own.
That shift could make the project especially interesting. It also gives the filmmaker more room to experiment with tone, characters and atmosphere.
The Story Remains a Mystery
For now, the biggest mystery surrounding System is its story. The filmmakers have not released a plot synopsis or detailed character information.
Likewise, the cast has not been publicly revealed. Therefore, audiences have almost no clues about what Rønning is preparing.
That secrecy has only increased interest in the project. After all, original horror films can benefit from keeping their biggest surprises hidden.
A Horror Team With Experience
Behind Rønning is a team with strong horror credentials. Spooky Pictures producers Roy Lee and Steven Schneider are attached to the project.
Lee has worked on major genre titles, including It and Weapons. Meanwhile, Schneider is known for producing projects connected to the Paranormal Activity and Insidious franchises.
Together, their experience adds another intriguing element to System. The production combines Rønning’s blockbuster background with producers deeply familiar with horror.
Image Nation Studios Joins the Project
Image Nation Studios is also involved in the production. CEO Ben Ross and Spooky Pictures’ Rami Yasin are serving as executive producers.
Furthermore, UTA Independent Film Group arranged financing for the movie. The company is also handling sales representation.
With several experienced companies and producers involved, System already has a strong industry team behind it.
Cameras Are Rolling in London
Production is currently taking place in London. However, the filmmakers have not announced a release date yet.
As filming continues, more information could eventually emerge. A casting announcement or first-look image could be the first major glimpse at the mysterious project.
For now, though, the production remains deliberately secretive.
What Makes System So Intriguing?
The biggest attraction is its mystery. Rønning is known for working on large-scale studio movies. This time, however, he is creating something audiences have never seen before.
Moreover, the project brings together an established blockbuster director and experienced horror producers. That combination could give System a distinctive identity.
Until more details arrive, fans will have to wait and wonder what kind of nightmare Rønning is creating.
With production already underway, System could soon reveal its first major secrets. Stay tuned for more updates as this mysterious horror project takes shape.
