Justin Baldoni to Produce Gina Rodriguez’s Boxing Film ‘House of Guerrero’

Justin Baldoni is reuniting professionally with his former Jane the Virgin co-star Gina Rodriguez. Baldoni’s Wayfarer Studios will produce House of Guerrero, marking Rodriguez’s theatrical directorial debut.

Rodriguez will direct, produce and star in the boxing drama. Professional boxer Ryan Garcia is also part of the project. The film is based on an original story by Rodriguez and screenwriter Bernardo Cubría.

House of Guerrero tells the story of a young fighter whose boxing career is derailed before he gets one last shot at redemption in the ring.

Boxing has been personally meaningful to Rodriguez for years. She wanted to create a film that shows what the sport can teach people beyond competition.

“Directing this film feels like the beginning of a new chapter,” Rodriguez said. She stressed her commitment to centering Latino families, characters and stories in the narrative.

This project brings Rodriguez and Baldoni together for the first time since Jane the Virgin, where Rodriguez played Jane Villanueva and Baldoni played her love interest Rafael Solano. The CW series ran for five seasons starting in 2014.

Baldoni said he witnessed Rodriguez’s talent firsthand during their years on set. He praised her passion for boxing and her dedication to Latino storytelling.

The production team includes Baldoni and Andrew Calof at Wayfarer Studios, along with producers Scott Budnick and Ameet Shukla of 1Community. Rodriguez’s I Can And I Will Productions is also involved through Molly Breeskin.

The filmmakers envision House of Guerrero as a boxing film for modern audiences, putting Latino characters front and center in a genre traditionally dominated by films like Rocky and Creed.

Fight choreography comes from Clayton J. Barber, who worked on Black Panther and Creed III, and Eric Brown, credited on John Wick: Chapter 3 Parabellum and The Matrix Resurrections.

The project was first announced in 2021 under the title Guerrero. With Baldoni and Wayfarer Studios now officially on board, production is moving forward as Rodriguez prepares for her feature film directorial debut.
