Actor Kubbra Sait has sparked a conversation about women’s safety in India with a powerful video questioning why women are constantly told to change their behavior instead of addressing the actions that put them at risk.
In the video, Sait takes aim at the familiar warnings women hear from childhood. These include what to wear, where to go, whom to meet and when to return home.
However, she questions whether following these rules can really guarantee safety.
Kubbra Sait Says Safety Feels Like Fiction
“Safety is a place called Narnia. Yes, it’s fictional,” Sait says at the beginning of the video.
She then points to incidents involving girls and women to highlight a troubling reality: danger does not follow a specific age, location, time or circumstance.
As a result, Sait argues that simply following a long list of precautions cannot guarantee that women will be safe.
“Cover up. Don’t go out at night. Don’t hang out with boys. Share your location. Carry pepper spray. Be careful. How much more careful are we supposed to be?” she asks.
Through these questions, she shifts the focus from what women should do to what society needs to address.
“When Are These Instructions Reaching the Boys?”
Sait then turns the conversation toward boys and men.
Instead of constantly teaching women how to avoid danger, she asks when boys will be taught how to respect women and their boundaries.
She specifically calls out behaviors such as stalking, following, threatening and punishing women for rejecting someone. Moreover, she stresses that consent must be respected.
In other words, the responsibility for creating safer spaces cannot rest entirely on women.
Kubbra Sait Challenges the “Boys Will Be Boys” Mindset
Sait also uses humor to make a serious point.
She suggests sending boys to a “reformation camp,” “consent camp,” “ego detox” or “patriarchy de-addiction centre.” While the comments are delivered with sarcasm, the message behind them is direct.
The familiar excuse that “boys will be boys,” she suggests, cannot be used to excuse harmful behavior.
Instead, boys need to learn about consent, boundaries and accountability. At the same time, women should not have to accept increasingly restrictive rules simply to feel safe.
“Feminism Is Nothing But the Simple Idea That Women Are People”
At the heart of Sait’s message is another pointed statement: “Feminism is nothing but the simple idea that women are people.”
She connects that idea to everyday freedoms that women should be able to enjoy without fear.
That includes studying, laughing, falling in love, riding a bike, spending time with friends or simply existing in a public space.
Therefore, her argument goes beyond individual safety tips. It questions a broader social expectation that women must constantly adjust their lives to avoid harm.
Shifting the Responsibility for Women’s Safety
Ultimately, Sait’s message calls for a change in how conversations about women’s safety are framed.
Rather than repeatedly asking women to be more careful, she wants society to examine the behavior that makes such precautions necessary in the first place.
The video therefore leaves viewers with a difficult question: How much more are women expected to change before society starts demanding change from those who make them unsafe?
For Sait, the conversation is not simply about safety rules. Instead, it is about consent, accountability and giving women the freedom to live without constantly being told to make themselves smaller.
