Senator Lindsey Graham Dies at 71 Following Sudden Illness

Republican Senator Lindsey Graham, a prominent figure in American politics for over two decades, has died at age 71 following a brief illness. The District of Columbia medical examiner’s office attributed his death to an aortic dissection linked to cardiovascular disease, though findings remain preliminary pending additional testing.

Graham served as South Carolina’s senior U.S. senator since 2003, establishing himself as a leading voice on national security, judicial appointments, and foreign policy matters. The South Carolina Republican was among the most influential lawmakers on Capitol Hill throughout his tenure.

An aortic dissection occurs when the inner layer of the aorta tears—a life-threatening emergency. In Graham’s case, officials linked the condition to arteriosclerotic cardiovascular disease.

Graham had just returned from a trip to Ukraine, where he met with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to discuss U.S. support and security concerns. He was scheduled to appear on NBC’s ‘Meet the Press’ following his return to Washington.

After first serving in the House of Representatives, Graham won his Senate seat in 2002. He became a key player in debates over defense, foreign affairs, immigration, and judicial nominations. Though skeptical of Donald Trump during the 2016 campaign, Graham later became one of the former president’s closest Senate allies.

South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster is expected to appoint an interim replacement to fill the seat, with a special election to follow.

World leaders, including President Trump, Ukrainian President Zelenskyy, and Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu, paid tribute to Graham’s decades of public service and his support for their nations.
