Morgan Freeman: “Pay Me Enough and I’ll Overlook a Bad Script”

In a refreshingly candid moment, Oscar-winning actor Morgan Freeman has laid bare the practical realities of Hollywood, admitting that a hefty paycheck can make even a mediocre screenplay worth his time.

During an interview with ‘The New York Times’, the legendary 88-year-old acknowledged what many in the industry think but rarely say aloud: money talks louder than art, at least sometimes.

“If somebody offers you a job, it’s very nice if they’re offering you also an exciting script,” Freeman explained. “But in reality, two or three things come into play. What are they going to pay you? If they’re going to pay you enough, then you overlook some of the glitches in the script that happen to be there.”

The comment offers a rare glimpse into how working actors actually make career decisions, stripped of the Hollywood polish about artistic integrity and meaningful roles.

With his 90th birthday on the horizon, Freeman shows no signs of hanging up his acting shoes. Instead, he plans to work as long as opportunities keep coming, comparing his philosophy to that of Clint Eastwood.

“If you can get out of bed and don’t fall down when you do it, then you just count your blessings and keep moving,” he said.

Freeman also joked that at his stage of life, chasing dream roles feels pointless. “I’m pushing 90 now. So, the roles that I wished I had been able to play, Denzel Washington will play,” he quipped.

Freeman recently appeared in Taylor Sheridan’s ‘Lioness’, where he plays Secretary of State Edwin Mullins. He praised Sheridan’s storytelling ability and willingness to explore authentic human struggles.

Beyond acting, Freeman continues making music, with a new blues album in the works. For one of Hollywood’s most respected figures, the drive to create and work remains as strong as ever.
