The 2026 MTV Video Music Awards delivered plenty of glitz, drama and surprise wins. Taylor Swift took home Video of the Year, while Madonna dominated the night with seven major awards.
Held on September 27 at Los Angeles’ Peacock Theater, the ceremony brought together some of music’s biggest stars. Hosted by Snoop Dogg, the event also featured performances, tributes and awards across pop, hip-hop, R&B, K-pop, Latin, country and alternative music.
Taylor Swift Claims Video of the Year
Taylor Swift secured one of the night’s biggest prizes. She won Video of the Year for “The Fate of Ophelia.”
Additionally, Swift won Best Direction for “Opalite.” She also received the inaugural MTV VMA Artist Director Honors for her work and creative vision behind the camera.
As a result, the night added another major milestone to Swift’s VMA history. According to the Associated Press, the new honor also made her the most-awarded artist in the ceremony’s history.
Madonna Dominates With Seven Awards
Meanwhile, Madonna had a huge night at the VMAs. The pop icon collected seven awards across several major categories.
She won Artist of the Year, Best Dance, Best Cinematography, Best Choreography, Best Long Form Video and Best Album. Moreover, she shared the Best Collaboration award with Sabrina Carpenter for “Bring Your Love.”
Her wins came after a highly anticipated performance at the ceremony. Madonna opened the show alongside Sabrina Carpenter and Charli XCX, making her return to the VMA stage one of the night’s major moments.
BTS and Global Stars Shine
K-pop continued to make its mark at the 2026 VMAs. BTS won Song of the Year for “SWIM” and also took home Best K-Pop for the same track.
The group wasn’t finished there. BTS also won Best Group in the social categories, further adding to its successful night.
Meanwhile, Lisa won Best Pop for “Dream feat. Kentaro Sakaguchi.” Rising star Sienna Spiro also scored a major career milestone by winning Best New Artist.
Cardi B, Bruno Mars and More Take Home Awards
Elsewhere, Cardi B featuring Kehlani won Best Hip-Hop for “Safe.” At the same time, Bruno Mars claimed Best R&B for “I Just Might.”
In the alternative category, Olivia Rodrigo won Best Alternative for “the cure.” Meanwhile, Ariana Grande picked up Best Visual Effects for “hate that i made you love me.”
Grande also won Song of Summer for the same track. Therefore, the singer walked away with two notable victories.
Bad Bunny and Ella Langley Score Genre Wins
The Latin music category went to Bad Bunny. He won Best Latin for “NUEVAYoL.”
Meanwhile, Ella Langley took home Best Country for “Choosin’ Texas.” These wins further highlighted the wide range of genres represented at this year’s ceremony.
The VMAs also continued to recognize the creative teams behind music videos. Sabrina Carpenter won Best Editing for “House Tour,” while PinkPantheress claimed Best Art Direction for “Stateside + Zara Larsson.”
Nirvana Receives the Video Vanguard Award
The ceremony also looked back at music history. Nirvana received the prestigious Video Vanguard Award.
Dave Grohl, Krist Novoselic and Pat Smear accepted the honor on behalf of the band. During the emotional moment, Novoselic also remembered late Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain.
The tribute added a historic touch to an otherwise star-packed night. It also recognized the band’s lasting influence on music and visual culture.
