Netflix has marked ten years in India with a grand premiere of Operation Safed Sagar at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi. The event celebrated more than a new series. It also highlighted a decade of bringing Indian stories to audiences worldwide.
However, what made the evening truly special was the presence of India’s top defence leadership. For the first time, the Chiefs of the Indian Army, Navy and Air Force came together at a premiere.
The historic gathering reflected the importance of a series built around military courage, sacrifice and national pride.
Defence Chiefs Unite for a Historic Evening
The premiere welcomed General N.S. Raja Subramani, Chief of Defence Staff, Admiral Krishna Swaminathan, Chief of the Naval Staff, and General Dhiraj Seth, Chief of the Army Staff.
Moreover, veterans from the legendary Golden Arrows Squadron also attended. These real-life pilots played a crucial role in the events that inspired the series.
Netflix Co-CEO Ted Sarandos joined the celebrations as well. Meanwhile, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh shared a special video message for the team.
Singh praised the creators for their respectful and authentic approach. He also highlighted the extreme conditions faced by Indian Air Force personnel during the Kargil War.
Kargil War Missions Took Place at Extreme Altitudes
The Kargil War forms the dramatic backdrop of Operation Safed Sagar. During the conflict, Indian Air Force missions were conducted at altitudes between 15,000 and 18,000 feet.
As a result, pilots had to operate under incredibly demanding conditions. The difficult terrain, extreme altitude and intense combat environment made every mission a major challenge.
These details give the series added significance. Rather than presenting a conventional military drama, Operation Safed Sagar explores the extraordinary circumstances surrounding the real operations.
Air Chief Marshal A.P. Singh also praised Netflix for bringing this important chapter to a wider audience. He highlighted the Kargil War’s significance for both the Indian Air Force and military aviation.
Netflix’s Biggest and Most Ambitious Production
Meanwhile, Ted Sarandos revealed the enormous scale of the project. He described Operation Safed Sagar as Netflix India’s biggest and most ambitious production to date.
The series has also generated more than $24 million, or approximately ₹215 crore, for the Indian economy. Therefore, the project represents more than a major entertainment release.
It also reflects the growing impact of large-scale streaming productions in India. After a decade in the country, Netflix continues to expand the scale and ambition of its local storytelling.
Shaan Adds a Patriotic Touch
The premiere also featured a strong musical element. Singer Shaan performed a selection of patriotic songs dedicated to the courage and sacrifice of India’s armed forces.
His performance added an emotional touch to the evening. It also complemented the central themes of Operation Safed Sagar.
Additionally, actor Taaruk Raina performed “Azma Le,” a recently released track from the series. The performance gave guests a closer look at the show’s musical world.
Operation Safed Sagar Explores an Untold Chapter
Indian cinema has explored military stories for decades. However, the aerial side of the Kargil War has received comparatively little attention on screen.
Operation Safed Sagar aims to fill that gap. The series places the Indian Air Force at the heart of its narrative.
In particular, it follows some of the youngest officers involved in the conflict. The story focuses on the Golden Arrows Squadron and the immense pressure faced by its personnel.
Yet the series goes beyond combat and aerial missions. It also explores the emotions, fears and sacrifices of the people behind the uniforms.
Extensive Research Behind the Series
Director Oni Sen and his creative team carried out extensive research while developing the series. Their aim was to recreate the period with historical authenticity while maintaining cinematic scale.
That balance was crucial. After all, the story is inspired by real events and real people.
Consequently, the series focuses as much on human experiences as it does on military operations. The young officers’ personal journeys add emotional depth to the larger historical narrative.
This approach could also help the series connect with younger viewers. While many audiences know about the Kargil War, fewer may be familiar with the Indian Air Force’s specific role during the conflict.
A Significant Milestone for Netflix India
The timing of the series is particularly noteworthy. As Netflix celebrates ten years in India, Operation Safed Sagar represents a major milestone for the platform.
Over the past decade, Netflix has expanded its Indian content slate across languages and genres. At the same time, it has helped Indian stories reach viewers beyond the country.
Now, the platform is using one of its most ambitious productions to revisit a defining moment in India’s military history.
As a result, Operation Safed Sagar becomes more than an entertainment project. It also reflects Netflix’s growing confidence in large-scale Indian stories with global appeal.
Operation Safed Sagar Now Streaming
Following its grand premiere, Operation Safed Sagar began streaming exclusively on Netflix on August 7.
The series combines military history, emotional storytelling and large-scale production. More importantly, it brings the Indian Air Force’s role in the Kargil War into sharper focus.
For Netflix, the series arrives at the perfect time. It celebrates a decade in India while also spotlighting a story of courage, sacrifice and national service.
