Netflix’s latest true-crime documentary revisits one of America’s most disturbing murder cases. Maternal Instinct chronicles the story of Taylor Parker, a Texas woman whose elaborate lies led to the murder of a pregnant friend and the attempted abduction of her unborn child in 2020.
Explore the unsettling true story behind *Maternal Instinct*, a documentary revealing a shocking murder case and deception.
Director Jessica Dimmock traces how Parker spent months convincing friends, family, and her boyfriend that she was pregnant. To maintain the deception, she used fake ultrasound images, silicone pregnancy prosthetics, staged celebrations, and carefully crafted social media posts.
The scheme reached a horrific climax on Oct. 9, 2020. Prosecutors said Parker murdered 21-year-old Reagan Simmons-Hancock, who was about 35 weeks pregnant, to steal her unborn baby and claim the child as her own. The infant, Braxlynn Sage, did not survive.
The documentary relies heavily on police body-camera footage, dashcam videos, and interviews with investigators and people who knew Parker. Instead of sensationalizing the crime, Dimmock focuses on its impact on the victim’s family and community. Critics have praised the film’s restrained and victim-centered approach.
Maternal Instinct also explores Parker’s relationship with her then-boyfriend, Wade Griffin. His testimony played a key role during the trial. Investigators believe Parker’s fake pregnancy scheme stemmed partly from her desire to preserve the relationship. Authorities never charged Griffin in connection with the crime.
A Texas jury convicted Parker of capital murder and kidnapping in 2022 and sentenced her to death. She remains on death row while pursuing appeals. The case remains one of the most shocking examples of fetal abduction in modern American criminal history.
With Maternal Instinct, Netflix takes a closer look at the warning signs, manipulation, and devastating consequences behind a crime that continues to haunt everyone affected by it.
