Operation Safed Sagar Gets Grand Netflix Premiere in Delhi

Netflix celebrated a decade in India in grand style on Wednesday. The streaming giant hosted the premiere of Operation Safed Sagar at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi.

The much-awaited series brings the untold story of the Indian Air Force’s role in the Kargil War to the screen. It also shines a light on a crucial chapter of military history that has received limited attention.

The premiere brought together senior defence officials, government dignitaries, war veterans, members of the real Golden Arrows Squadron, and the series’ cast and crew. Netflix Co-CEO Ted Sarandos also attended the event.

Ted Sarandos Highlights Netflix’s India Journey

The premiere also marked Netflix’s 10-year journey in India. During the event, Sarandos reflected on the platform’s growth and its focus on taking Indian stories to audiences worldwide.

He described Operation Safed Sagar as Netflix India’s biggest and most ambitious production so far. Moreover, he revealed that the production has contributed more than $24 million, or around ₹215 crore, to the Indian economy.

Sarandos also praised India’s growing filmmaking capabilities. According to him, the country now has the talent, technical expertise and infrastructure to deliver productions that can compete with the best in the world.

Defence Leaders Praise the Series

The impressive guest list reflected the importance of the occasion. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh shared a special video message and praised the team for presenting the story with authenticity and sensitivity.

Singh also highlighted the extraordinary nature of the Indian Air Force’s operations during the Kargil War. Air operations were conducted at altitudes between 15,000 and 18,000 feet, making the missions exceptionally challenging.

Meanwhile, Chief of the Air Staff Air Chief Marshal A.P. Singh praised Netflix for bringing the project to life. He described the Kargil War as a turning point for the Indian Air Force and military aviation worldwide.

Bringing the Kargil Story to a Wider Audience

Despite existing literature on the conflict, much of the Indian Air Force’s story has not reached a wider audience. Therefore, Air Chief Marshal Singh believes the series can help bridge that gap.

Through Netflix, the story can now reach viewers in India and around the world. It also gives audiences an opportunity to understand the courage and determination of India’s air warriors.

Minister of State for Defence Sanjay Seth also called the series inspirational. He suggested that its portrayal of military courage and sacrifice could motivate younger generations to consider serving the nation.

The premiere also welcomed Chief of Defence Staff General N.S. Raja Subramani, Chief of the Naval Staff Admiral Krishna Swaminathan and Chief of the Army Staff General Dhiraj Seth.

War veterans and families of those who served during the conflict were also present. Their presence made the evening even more meaningful.

Shaan Adds a Patriotic Touch

The premiere featured a special musical tribute as well. Singer Shaan performed a selection of patriotic songs for the guests.

His performance celebrated the courage and sacrifice of India’s armed forces. It also added an emotional touch to an evening centred on military bravery.

Additionally, actor Taaruk Raina performed “Azma Le”, a newly released song from Operation Safed Sagar. The performance gave audiences an early taste of the series’ musical world.

The Story Behind Operation Safed Sagar

At its heart, Operation Safed Sagar follows the experiences of some of the Indian Air Force’s youngest officers during the Kargil War.

The series focuses on the Golden Arrows Squadron. It explores their courage, pressure and sacrifice as they carried out missions at extreme altitudes.

However, the show goes beyond military action. It also focuses on the human stories behind the operation.

Director Oni Sen and the creative team conducted extensive research to recreate this chapter of history. As a result, the series aims to balance scale with authenticity and emotional depth.

A New Chapter for Indian Storytelling

The premiere also underlined Netflix’s broader commitment to Indian stories. Over the past decade, the platform has taken several local productions to international audiences.

Now, Operation Safed Sagar adds another important story to that journey. It combines military history, human courage and large-scale storytelling.

At the same time, the series gives emerging creative voices an opportunity to bring a nationally significant story to a global audience.

Operation Safed Sagar Now Streaming Worldwide

Following its grand premiere, Operation Safed Sagar began streaming exclusively on Netflix on August 7.

The series is now available to audiences in India and around the world. It offers viewers a closer look at the Indian Air Force’s crucial contribution to the Kargil War.

Ultimately, the series is both a tribute to India’s air warriors and a celebration of the country’s evolving storytelling power.
