Rachel Dratch brought unexpected laughs to the 2026 MTV Video Music Awards. Her hilarious fictional pop star character, Pumpkin Spice, turned a Dunkin’ campaign into one of the night’s most memorable comedy moments.
The comedian appeared at the September 27 ceremony in Los Angeles as Pumpkin Spice. Dratch introduced the character earlier this month as the supposedly “long-lost” sixth member of the Spice Girls.
What started as a seasonal advertisement soon became full-blown awards-show comedy. The sketch featured backstage chaos, a Pumpkin Spice Latte and plenty of exaggerated pop-star energy.
The two-part segment also gave viewers a fun break from the night’s musical performances and tributes. At the same time, it cleverly connected Dunkin’s fall campaign with one of music’s biggest events.
A Fictional Spice Girls Comeback
Pumpkin Spice first appeared in a Dunkin’ campaign featuring real Spice Girls members Emma Bunton and Geri Halliwell-Horner.
According to the fictional backstory, Pumpkin Spice was once part of the iconic group. However, she eventually left the band to follow a different passion: her love for lattes.
Dratch fully embraced the ridiculous premise. She played Pumpkin Spice as a performer who genuinely believes she is a legendary pop icon.
However, her supposed fame does not exactly get the reaction she expects.
Nobody Remembers Pumpkin Spice
At the VMAs, Pumpkin Spice finds herself backstage and quickly runs into a major problem. Nobody seems to recognize her as a former Spice Girl.
Instead, people recognize her as Rachel Dratch.
That confusion becomes one of the sketch’s biggest jokes. Pumpkin Spice then tries to prove her importance by talking about her fictional career and supposed pop-culture achievements.
She references imaginary magazine covers and Y2K-era dance crazes. Unfortunately for her, nobody seems to remember any of them.
As a result, her attempt at a glamorous comeback becomes increasingly awkward.
All She Wants Is a Pumpkin Spice Latte
Despite the chaos, Pumpkin Spice has a surprisingly simple goal.
She wants a Pumpkin Spice Latte.
That request becomes a running joke throughout the sketch. Meanwhile, her increasingly dramatic behavior keeps pushing the situation further into absurd territory.
Then comes the biggest twist.
Rachel Dratch herself appears, forcing Pumpkin Spice to confront the actress behind the character.
The bizarre encounter quickly turns into physical comedy. Flying vases, a trombone and plenty of over-the-top reactions follow.
Pumpkin Spice even gets a new battle cry: “Gourd Power.”
Dratch Brings Her Comedy Skills to the VMAs
The sketch also highlights Dratch’s strength in character-driven comedy.
Known for her work on Saturday Night Live, Dratch has built a career around memorable characters and sharp comedic performances. She brings that same energy to Pumpkin Spice.
Moreover, she never plays the character as a simple advertising mascot.
Instead, Pumpkin Spice has her own personality, backstory and exaggerated sense of fame. Dratch commits completely to the joke, which makes the character even more entertaining.
The result is a sketch that feels intentionally chaotic from beginning to end.
A Different Kind of VMAs Moment
The 2026 VMAs featured major performances, tributes and award celebrations. Lisa delivered the first televised performance of “SaWaDiKa,” while the ceremony also featured a George Michael tribute.
Against those major musical moments, Pumpkin Spice offered something completely different.
There was no elaborate concert production. There was no chart-topping performance.
Instead, the segment relied on comedy, nostalgia and a deliberately silly story.
That contrast helped the sketch stand out.
Spice Girls Nostalgia Meets Fall Flavor
The Pumpkin Spice campaign also cleverly taps into nostalgia.
The Spice Girls remain one of the most recognizable pop groups of the 1990s. By creating a fictional sixth member, Dunkin’ found a playful way to revisit that pop-culture history.
At the same time, the campaign connects the nostalgia with one of the most recognizable flavors of the fall season.
The combination makes the concept easy to understand. It also gives the character plenty of room for comedy.
Most importantly, having real Spice Girls members involved makes the fictional story even more convincing.
From Commercial Character to Pop-Culture Moment
What began as a seasonal advertising campaign has now grown into something much bigger.
Pumpkin Spice has appeared alongside genuine Spice Girls members. She has also starred in Dunkin’ commercials and now has a place at one of the entertainment industry’s biggest nights.
Furthermore, the VMAs appearance expands the character’s fictional story.
Instead of being limited to a traditional commercial, Pumpkin Spice has become part of a larger comedy narrative. Each appearance adds another layer to her exaggerated pop-star history.
Whether she returns for another appearance remains to be seen.
Rachel Dratch Gives Pumpkin Spice a Bigger Stage
For now, however, Dratch has taken the character far beyond a typical seasonal advertisement.
Her VMAs appearance combined pop nostalgia, physical comedy and brand humor in one unexpected package. The result was a memorable detour from the evening’s major musical performances.
And, ultimately, that may be the funniest part of Pumpkin Spice’s fictional comeback.
She may believe she is a forgotten pop legend. Yet this time, audiences actually remembered her.
The joke may have started with a latte, but Pumpkin Spice has officially arrived on the VMAs stage.
