Rasika Dugal has opened up about her long journey in Bollywood. The actor revealed that it took nearly a decade after film school for her career to gain real momentum.
Speaking on Neha Dhupia and Angad Bedi’s podcast Double Date, Rasika appeared alongside her husband and actor Mukul Chadda. During the candid conversation, she reflected on her career, struggles and personal life.
Meanwhile, Neha Dhupia praised Rasika’s distinctive body of work. She told the actor, “Rasika, you have become a genre and it is amazing.”
Rasika Dugal Recalls Her Early Years
However, Rasika’s rise was far from overnight. After graduating from the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) in 2006, she spent years taking on different roles and projects.
Although the work kept coming, recognition remained limited. Still, those opportunities helped her stay connected to the industry and continue developing her craft.
“There was always stuff in between to encourage me and keep me alive,” Rasika said. However, she added that this work was not as widely known as what she did after 2016.
2016-17 Became A Major Turning Point
When Neha asked Rasika when she finally felt that she had found her place in the industry, the actor pointed to 2016 and 2017.
“From the time work became more continuous, it was between 2016-17. I moved from FTII in 2006, so it was a good 10 years later,” she explained.
That decade was filled with experiences. Rasika had already worked in projects such as Kshay and Qissa. Moreover, these films gave her opportunities to collaborate with acclaimed talent.
Yet, public recognition was still not at the level it would reach later.
Manto, Mirzapur And Delhi Crime Bring Recognition
Then came a major shift. Projects started arriving more consistently, and Rasika found herself working on several prominent titles.
She specifically mentioned Manto, Mirzapur and Delhi Crime. These projects helped introduce her performances to a much wider audience.
“It was after 2016 that work like Manto, Mirzapur and Delhi Crime, and a couple of other works, started happening back to back,” she shared.
As a result, Rasika’s visibility grew steadily. Her performances also allowed audiences to see her in very different roles.
OTT Platforms Changed The Landscape
Importantly, this career shift happened alongside the rapid growth of streaming platforms in India.
OTT storytelling opened new doors for actors. Longer formats also allowed performers to explore characters with greater depth and complexity.
For Rasika, the timing proved significant. She could move between films and series while taking on intense, layered roles.
Consequently, her work reached audiences who may not have discovered her through her earlier films.
