Rihanna Shooter Indicted on 14 Felony Counts

A Florida woman accused of opening fire at Rihanna and A$AP Rocky’s Los Angeles-area home has been indicted on 14 felony counts, including attempted murder.

The case had been on hold for months because of psychiatric evaluations. However, it is now moving forward after a judge ruled that Ivanna Lisette Ortiz is competent to stand trial.

The 36-year-old Orlando woman appeared in court after the indictment was unsealed. Her attorney entered a not-guilty plea on her behalf. Meanwhile, a judge set her bail at $2.6 million.

The alleged shooting happened in March. Authorities say around 20 rounds were fired at the property. Thankfully, no one was physically injured. However, the bullets reportedly struck an Airstream trailer where Rihanna and A$AP Rocky were staying. They also hit the exterior wall of a nursery where their children and a nanny were present.

The Case Finally Moves Forward

For months, the case was essentially on pause.

Ortiz underwent psychiatric evaluations to determine whether she was mentally competent to stand trial. Eventually, a judge ruled that she could understand the proceedings and participate in her defense.

Meanwhile, a grand jury had already indicted Ortiz in June. However, the indictment remained sealed while the competency issue was being handled.

Once that matter was resolved, the indictment was unsealed. The new charges also replaced the original charges filed after her March arrest.

What Happened at Rihanna’s Home?

According to prosecutors, Ortiz traveled from Florida to California before allegedly arriving at the Beverly Hills-area property on March 8.

Authorities say she was driving a Tesla when she allegedly pulled up near the home. She then reportedly used an AR-15-style rifle and fired about 20 rounds toward the property and a neighboring residence.

As a result, the Airstream trailer was damaged. Bullets also reportedly struck the exterior wall near the nursery.

Rihanna and A$AP Rocky were reportedly inside the trailer at the time. Their three children were also at the property with a nanny.

In addition, Rihanna’s mother and several staff members were inside the main house. Despite the gunfire, nobody suffered physical injuries.

Ortiz Faces 14 Felony Charges

The new indictment contains 14 felony counts.

They include one count of attempted murder involving Rihanna. Ortiz also faces 10 counts of assault with an assault weapon.

Additionally, she faces three counts related to shooting at an occupied dwelling or camper.

The assault charges involve multiple people who were allegedly placed in danger during the incident. Rihanna and A$AP Rocky’s three children are also listed among the alleged victims.

If Ortiz is convicted on all the charges, she could face life in prison. However, these are allegations at this stage. Ortiz has pleaded not guilty and remains presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.

She Has Pleaded Not Guilty

Ortiz did not speak to reporters following her court appearance.

Instead, her attorney entered a not-guilty plea on her behalf.

Her defense team has indicated that it will protect Ortiz’s legal rights as the case continues. According to reports, Ortiz told investigators after her arrest that she was not trying to kill anyone.

However, her attorneys have not publicly laid out a detailed defense strategy.

Psychiatric Evaluations Delayed the Case

The mental competency issue became a major part of the proceedings after Ortiz’s arrest.

The court ordered psychiatric evaluations before determining whether she was competent to stand trial. Those evaluations remain sealed, so their specific findings have not been made public.

Still, the judge ultimately ruled that Ortiz is competent.

Importantly, that decision does not determine whether she is guilty or innocent. Instead, it means she is considered capable of understanding the proceedings and working with her defense team.

The Motive Remains Unclear

One major question is still unanswered: Why did the alleged shooting happen?

Prosecutors have not publicly established a motive. There also has not been any publicly confirmed personal relationship between Ortiz and Rihanna.

However, authorities have reportedly pointed to social media activity that allegedly became increasingly hostile toward Rihanna before the shooting.

Still, those posts do not automatically establish a motive. The circumstances surrounding them will likely receive further attention as the prosecution builds its case.

Why the Grand Jury Indictment Matters

The case also took a different legal route.

Instead of proceeding through a traditional preliminary hearing, prosecutors presented evidence to a grand jury. The process takes place behind closed doors.

The grand jury ultimately returned an indictment in June. However, the document stayed sealed for months because of the competency proceedings.

Now that the indictment has been unsealed, Ortiz faces a broader set of felony allegations than those filed immediately after her arrest.

Rihanna and A$AP Rocky Were Not Injured

Despite the seriousness of the incident, Rihanna, A$AP Rocky and their children were not physically injured.

Still, the alleged gunfire came dangerously close to areas occupied by the family. The damage to the trailer and the nursery wall has added to the seriousness of the case.

For a high-profile family, the incident also raises obvious concerns about privacy and security.

Rihanna remains one of the biggest names in global entertainment. The Grammy-winning singer has delivered major hits including “Umbrella,” “We Found Love” and “Work.”

What Happens Next?

Now that the indictment is public and Ortiz has been ruled competent to stand trial, the criminal case can move into its next phase.

The prosecution will have to prove its allegations in court. Meanwhile, the defense will have the opportunity to challenge the evidence and present its case.

The proceedings could shed more light on what happened at the property, what evidence investigators have collected and whether prosecutors can establish the alleged intent behind the shooting.

For now, the case remains ongoing. The indictment is a significant development, but it is not a conviction.
