Actor Rishabh Sawhney has revealed an unexpected source of inspiration for his upcoming film. The actor turned to Jon Snow from HBO’s Game of Thrones while preparing for his challenging historical role in Nagabandham.
Sawhney, who recently impressed audiences as Azhar Akhtar in Fighter, is taking on a dual role in the upcoming film. He plays historical warrior Ahmad Shah Abdali as well as his modern-day reincarnation, Ali.
For Abdali, however, the actor needed more than the right costume and dialogue. He also had to develop the physical presence of a powerful warrior. That is where Kit Harington’s Jon Snow came into the picture.
Rishabh Sawhney Turns to Game of Thrones
Sawhney has openly shared his admiration for Game of Thrones. In fact, the fantasy series became an important reference point during his preparation for Abdali.
“I’m a huge, huge fan of Game of Thrones,” the actor said while discussing his role.
The show features several memorable warriors. However, Jon Snow stood out for Sawhney. His controlled movements, strong posture and commanding presence gave the actor useful inspiration.
As a result, Sawhney began studying Jon Snow’s stance and walk. He then used those elements to develop Abdali’s physicality.
Hours of Practice Helped Build Abdali
However, Sawhney did not stop at simply watching the series. Instead, he turned his inspiration into a daily exercise.
The actor spent hours practising Jon Snow’s stance and walk. He repeated the movements until they became natural.
This process helped him avoid making Abdali’s physicality look forced. By the time filming began, the movements had become instinctive.
Moreover, the preparation highlights how important body language can be for an actor. A character’s presence is not created through dialogue alone.
Why Physicality Matters in Historical Roles
Costumes and makeup can instantly place a character in another era. Nevertheless, physical performance is equally important.
The way a character stands can communicate confidence. Similarly, the way they walk can suggest power, authority or vulnerability.
For Sawhney, these details were essential. He wanted Abdali to feel like a formidable historical warrior rather than simply look like one.
Therefore, his preparation went beyond learning lines and understanding the character’s story. He worked on movement, posture and presence to make the transformation more convincing.
Rishabh Sawhney Faces a Dual Challenge
Meanwhile, Nagabandham presents Sawhney with an additional challenge. He is playing two characters from completely different worlds.
One is Ahmad Shah Abdali, a historical warrior. The other is Ali, his modern-day reincarnation.
Naturally, the two characters require different physical identities. Abdali needs the authority and presence of a warrior, while Ali belongs to a contemporary setting.
At the same time, the performances must retain a connection. This balance makes Sawhney’s preparation even more important.
Jon Snow Was an Inspiration, Not a Copy
Interestingly, Sawhney’s approach was not about copying Jon Snow completely. Instead, he used the character as a starting point.
He studied Jon Snow’s physicality and then adapted it for Abdali. As a result, the inspiration could influence his performance without overpowering his own interpretation.
That distinction matters. After all, a strong performance requires an actor to transform inspiration into something personal.
In Sawhney’s case, Jon Snow provided the foundation. However, the actor’s own preparation ultimately shaped Abdali.
From Fighter to Nagabandham
Sawhney’s upcoming role also marks an interesting progression in his career.
He earned attention for his portrayal of Azhar Akhtar in Fighter. Now, Nagabandham gives him the opportunity to explore a much more layered performance.
This time, the actor must move between history and the modern world. He must also establish two distinct identities while maintaining a clear connection between them.
Consequently, the role demands both physical and emotional transformation.
A Performance Built Through Discipline
Sawhney’s preparation also demonstrates the value of repetition.
Practising the same stance and walk for hours requires discipline. More importantly, it allows physical movements to become part of an actor’s muscle memory.
That can make a major difference once the cameras start rolling.
Instead of consciously thinking about every movement, Sawhney could allow the physicality to emerge naturally. This, in turn, could help make Abdali’s presence feel more authentic.
Audiences May Feel the Jon Snow Influence
Interestingly, viewers may not immediately recognise the Game of Thrones connection when they watch Nagabandham.
They may not consciously think about Jon Snow while watching Sawhney as Abdali. Nevertheless, they could still notice the confidence, authority and controlled physicality that inspired the actor.
Ultimately, the influence is less about imitation and more about understanding what makes a warrior believable.
Sawhney’s journey from Azhar Akhtar in Fighter to Ahmad Shah Abdali in Nagabandham therefore represents an exciting new chapter in his career.
And while Jon Snow may have sparked the idea, it was Sawhney’s hours of practice that helped turn that inspiration into a performance.
