After four decades in the film industry, Sanjay Dutt has seen Bollywood change dramatically. The actor recently opened up about how the industry has moved from a close-knit community to a far more competitive space.
In a conversation with Dr. D. Nageshwar Reddy on AIG Hospitals’ YouTube channel, Dutt spoke about the changing culture of Bollywood. He also revealed what he misses most about the industry’s earlier days.
From Family to Fierce Competition
Dutt remembers a very different Bollywood. In his view, the industry once felt like one big family.
Actors, filmmakers and other professionals supported each other. More importantly, they celebrated each other’s successes.
However, that sense of camaraderie has gradually faded. According to Dutt, Bollywood has become increasingly competitive and “cut-throat.”
Still, the veteran actor remains hopeful. He believes the industry can bring back some of the warmth and unity it once had.
Moreover, Dutt’s perspective carries weight because of his long career. Since making his debut with Rocky in 1981, he has witnessed several generations of Bollywood.
Sanjay Dutt Looks to Hollywood
Meanwhile, Dutt believes Bollywood can learn something from Hollywood. Competition exists there too. However, he feels it is often healthier.
According to the actor, Hollywood has stronger professional communities and industry bodies. These networks can provide greater support to actors and writers.
Dutt also pointed to award ceremonies. He observed that Hollywood performers often celebrate their peers’ achievements without allowing jealousy to take over.
Therefore, for Dutt, competition does not have to create hostility. Instead, professionals can compete while still respecting and supporting one another.
Dutt’s Bollywood Friendships Remain Strong
Interestingly, Dutt’s own friendships show that camaraderie still exists in Bollywood.
His longtime bond with Salman Khan recently grabbed attention. Khan shared a warm picture of the two actors together on Instagram.
The moment served as a reminder that genuine friendships can survive in a competitive industry. In fact, their bond reflects the kind of togetherness Dutt appears to value.

Meanwhile, Dutt continues to remain active in films. His recent political drama Aakhri Sawal did not perform strongly at the box office. The film reportedly earned around ₹3 crore.
However, the actor has another major project coming up. He is set to return as Ballu Balram in Khalnayak Returns, which revisits his iconic character from the 1993 classic Khal Nayak.
Interestingly, the idea for the sequel came from an unexpected chapter of Dutt’s life. He reportedly discussed the possibility of a follow-up during his time in prison in connection with the 1993 Mumbai blasts case.
Dutt spoke about the idea with fellow inmates. They responded positively and even shared their suggestions for the story.
Later, Dutt reviewed their ideas and discussed the concept with filmmaker Subhash Ghai. Ghai encouraged him to take the project forward.
Can Bollywood Bring Back Its Unity?
At its core, Dutt’s observation raises an important question. Can competition and camaraderie truly coexist in Bollywood?
After all, filmmaking is a collaborative process. Actors, directors, writers, technicians and producers must work together to create a successful film.
