The 16-Monday fast dedicated to Lord Shiva is often linked to unmarried women seeking the right life partner. However, astrologer Geetu Parmar says its spiritual meaning goes much further.
According to Parmar, anyone seeking Mahadev’s blessings can observe the vrat with faith. Whether it is career growth, family happiness, health, financial concerns or peace of mind, the practice can hold personal significance.
Breaking the Marriage Myth
Traditionally, Solah Somvar Vrat is associated with unmarried women praying for a suitable partner. However, Parmar says marriage is only one reason devotees may choose to observe the fast.
Married women can also keep the vrat. They may pray for their husband’s health, long life and a peaceful married life.
Similarly, men can observe the fast too. According to Parmar, they may seek career growth, better opportunities and progress in business.
Moreover, couples facing difficulties in conceiving may also turn to the vrat as a spiritual practice. For Parmar, the key is approaching Mahadev with genuine faith.
Shravan Mondays Offer an Alternative
Observing 16 consecutive Mondays may not be possible for everyone. Therefore, Parmar points to another traditional option.
The four Mondays of Shravan are considered highly significant. Those who cannot complete all 16 fasts can observe these Mondays with devotion.
Ultimately, the focus is not only on the number of fasts. Instead, intention, discipline and faith remain central to the practice.
Start With a Sincere Sankalp
The observance begins with a sankalp, or spiritual resolution. Ideally, devotees should make the sankalp on Monday morning after taking a bath.
Parmar recommends sitting before Mahadev with some water, rice, a flower and a few coins. The devotee can then state their intention and explain what they are praying for.
After making the sankalp, the water is released onto the ground. This marks the beginning of the devotee’s spiritual commitment.
Worship the Entire Shiva Family
The puja should not stop with the Shivling, Parmar emphasizes. During Shravan, devotees should also worship the entire Shiva family.
This includes Goddess Parvati, Lord Ganesha, Lord Kartikeya and Nandi. Therefore, devotees can give attention to each deity rather than simply offering water to the Shivling.
The practice, she suggests, should be approached with devotion and awareness.
Churma Holds Special Significance
For devotees observing all 16 Mondays, preparing churma as prasad is traditionally considered important.
The churma can be prepared with wheat flour, ghee and jaggery, while following the fasting rules appropriate to the devotee.
Once prepared, the churma is traditionally divided into three equal portions. One portion is offered to Mahadev. The second is distributed as prasad, while the third is consumed by the person observing the fast.
Moreover, preparing the prasad at home adds a personal touch to the ritual. The effort itself becomes an expression of devotion.
Why the Vrat Katha Matters
The Solah Somvar Vrat Katha is another important part of the observance. Parmar says devotees should read the katha themselves whenever possible.
However, those unable to read it can listen to it. Either way, the katha helps devotees understand the spiritual significance of the vrat.
It also keeps them connected to the purpose behind their prayers and fasting.
Faith Remains the Foundation
Ultimately, Parmar’s message is simple. Solah Somvar Vrat is not restricted to one gender, relationship status or specific wish.
People facing financial difficulties, health concerns, emotional stress or other challenges may choose to observe the fast as a spiritual practice.
At its heart, the vrat is about faith and devotion towards Mahadev. For believers, a sincere sankalp and disciplined observance are believed to invite positive energy and divine blessings.
So, whether the prayer is for marriage, family, career or inner peace, the spiritual journey can begin with a simple intention.
