Former actress and activist Somy Ali has backed veteran actor Govinda. She has challenged the criticism surrounding his decision to work opposite a younger actress in his latest project.
Ali, who now runs the NGO No More Tears, shared her views on Instagram. She also drew on her experience of working with Govinda in Andolan (1995).
Somy Ali Defends Govinda
Ali decided to speak up after seeing the criticism aimed at Govinda. She also highlighted her personal and professional experience with the actor.
“I am going to chime in here as no one else will and show support whenever it’s necessary,” she wrote.
Moreover, Ali said her time in Bollywood helped her understand Govinda closely. She believes that experience gives her insight into both his talent and his character.
‘Talent Doesn’t Have an Expiration Date’
Ali built her message around one clear point: talent doesn’t have an expiration date.
She argued that actors should not face ridicule for continuing to work as they grow older. Instead, she believes the industry should respect their determination.
“There is nothing ageist about an actor accepting a role with a younger actress,” Ali said.
She also pointed out that actors often find fewer opportunities as they age. Therefore, they should receive support when they take on new work instead of facing unnecessary criticism.
Ali Calls Out Ageism in Bollywood
Ali also highlighted the wider problem of ageism in Bollywood.
Older actors continue to attract audiences and lead major projects. However, they can still face criticism when their on-screen pairings challenge traditional expectations.
According to Ali, age should not determine an actor’s professional worth. Instead, the industry should value talent, dedication and professionalism.
An Actor’s Worth Goes Beyond Age
Ali also rejected the idea that an actor’s age should determine their value. She believes the same principle should apply to the age gap between co-stars.
“Getting another opportunity when doors have been difficult to open should be celebrated,” she wrote.
Furthermore, Ali wants actors to get opportunities to prove they can still make a meaningful contribution. For her, the decision to keep working reflects commitment to the craft.
As a result, she wants the conversation to shift away from age-based judgments. Instead, she wants audiences to focus on an actor’s performance and talent.
Somy Ali Praises Govinda and Sunita
Ali also praised Govinda and his wife, Sunita Ahuja. She described Govinda as “one of the greatest talents” she encountered in the Hindi film industry.
She also remembered him as one of the most humble actors she knew during her Bollywood career. Additionally, she expressed immense respect for both Govinda and Sunita.
Her words show that Ali’s admiration for her former co-star has remained strong despite the years since they worked together.
Govinda’s Legacy Still Matters
Govinda became one of Bollywood’s biggest stars during the 1990s and early 2000s. His comic timing, dance skills and energetic performances made him a favourite among audiences.
Meanwhile, films such as Coolie No. 1 and Hero No. 1 strengthened his position as a mainstream Bollywood star. His distinctive style also helped him build a lasting legacy.
Therefore, his current career continues to attract attention. However, Ali believes his legacy should not stop him from pursuing new opportunities.
A Message for the Industry
Ali’s statement goes beyond Govinda. It also speaks to performers who face pressure to step away after reaching a certain age.
She believes nobody should use age as a weapon against someone who wants to earn a living and continue doing what they love. More importantly, she sees persistence as a strength.
The entertainment industry constantly changes. Still, Ali believes actors should receive encouragement when they choose to keep working.
Her message remains clear: talent does not have an expiry date, and passion for acting should not come with an age limit.
