Spaceballs: The New One Footage Revealed as Rick Moranis Makes Triumphant Return

Fans at San Diego Comic-Con got their first glimpse of Spaceballs: The New One, the long-awaited sequel to Mel Brooks’ 1987 sci-fi comedy classic. The exclusive footage brought back beloved characters, introduced a new generation of heroes and villains, and earned one of the convention’s biggest standing ovations.

The biggest surprise came when Rick Moranis stepped onto the Hall H stage, making one of his rare public appearances and officially returning as the iconic Dark Helmet after nearly three decades away from live-action films.

Although the studio has not released the trailer publicly, attendees described the footage as a nostalgic yet modern continuation of the beloved parody franchise. The preview delivered classic Spaceballs humor, fresh visual gags, and playful shots at today’s blockbuster cinematic universes while preserving the over-the-top comedy that turned the original film into a cult favorite.

The presentation also featured behind-the-scenes footage and extended previews of both returning favorites and new characters.

One of the panel’s most memorable moments occurred when Moranis appeared in the oversized Dark Helmet costume, prompting an emotional standing ovation from fans.

Moranis has largely stayed away from live-action acting since the late 1990s, making his appearance one of the sequel’s biggest draws. During the event, he joked that conversations about a new Spaceballs movie had continued for decades before the project finally came together.

Spaceballs: The New One reunites several stars from the original film, including Mel Brooks as Yogurt and President Skroob, Rick Moranis as Dark Helmet, Bill Pullman as Lone Starr, Daphne Zuniga as Princess Vespa, and George Wyner as Colonel Sandurz.

The sequel also welcomes Josh Gad, Keke Palmer, Lewis Pullman, and Anthony Carrigan, who bring a fresh wave of characters to the galaxy-spoofing adventure.

Although Brooks did not attend Comic-Con in person, the legendary filmmaker appeared in a humorous prerecorded video message.

Brooks also confirmed that the sequel’s official title is Spaceballs: The New One. He joked that the long-rumored subtitle, The Search for More Money, was dropped because he had finally “found the money.”

Amazon MGM Studios will release Spaceballs: The New One in theaters on April 23, 2027.

Director Josh Greenbaum helms the sequel, while Josh Gad, Dan Hernandez, and Benji Samit penned the screenplay. Together, they aim to balance nostalgia with fresh comedy for longtime fans and new audiences.

The original Spaceballs remains one of the most beloved sci-fi parodies in movie history. With Moranis returning as Dark Helmet, Brooks reprising multiple roles, and a new ensemble cast joining the franchise, the sequel has already become one of the most anticipated comedy films of 2027.
