Mumbai is gearing up to host The Drama Utsav Mumbai 2026, India’s biggest multilingual theatre festival. Scheduled from November 13 to 29, 2026, the event will bring together some of the country’s biggest names in live theatre. It aims to unite audiences across languages, cultures, and artistic traditions.
The Drama Utsav Mumbai 2026 brings India's biggest multilingual theatre festival to Mumbai with star-studded plays, masterclasses, and awards.
The festival will be held at St. Andrew’s Auditorium. Over 17 days, it will stage 22 premium productions in Hindi, Marathi, Gujarati, English, and Bengali. Unlike traditional theatre festivals, it celebrates India’s linguistic diversity on one platform.
A Star-Studded Line-Up Takes Centre Stage
The festival boasts an impressive line-up of acclaimed actors and productions. Nawazuddin Siddiqui will headline the Hindi play Naqaab. Shabana Azmi returns to the stage with the acclaimed Broken Images. Meanwhile, Anupam Kher will present his popular autobiographical play Kuch Bhi Ho Sakta Hai.
English theatre lovers can also look forward to performances by Shernaz Patel, Rajit Kapur, Vinay Pathak, and Lillete Dubey.
Meanwhile, the Marathi theatre segment celebrates Maharashtra’s rich dramatic heritage. It features leading names such as Sayaji Shinde, Sachin Khedekar, Swapnil Joshi, Prashant Damle, Dilip Prabhavalkar, and Vijay Kenkare. The productions will showcase both classic and contemporary theatre.
More Than Just Theatre Performances
However, The Drama Utsav Mumbai 2026 is more than a series of plays. It also focuses on learning, collaboration, and nurturing new talent.
The festival will host masterclasses by leading theatre professionals. These sessions will give aspiring actors, writers, and directors valuable industry insights. In addition, an inter-collegiate theatre conclave will provide young performers with a platform to showcase their work and connect with industry veterans.
The programme will also feature a special inclusive performance spotlight. As a result, the festival aims to make theatre more accessible and representative.
A Vision to Create a Cultural Institution
The festival has been conceived and curated by Paritosh Painter. He hopes to make it a permanent annual cultural institution for Mumbai. More importantly, he wants it to celebrate the diversity and spirit of Indian theatre.
Speaking about the initiative, he said, “Theatre is more than performance. It is connection, reflection and the celebration of our times. The Drama Utsav is our attempt to bring India’s finest theatre voices together and create a festival that Mumbai can proudly call its own.”
His vision also includes encouraging collaboration, supporting young talent, and bringing together audiences from different language communities.
Industry Icons Lend Their Support
The festival has received strong support from the entertainment industry. Its brand ambassadors include Boman Irani, Jim Sarbh, Neena Gupta, Kalki Koechlin, and Mithila Palkar. Their involvement reflects the growing importance of live theatre in India’s creative landscape.
Meanwhile, the official poster was unveiled on June 22 in New Delhi by Union Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat. The event was attended by Paritosh Painter and his team, along with Hemant Madhvani from BookMyShow. Their presence highlighted strong industry and institutional support.
A Grand Finale Celebrating Theatre Excellence
The festival will conclude with a grand Awards Night on December 1, 2026, at JW Marriott Mumbai.
The ceremony will honour excellence across Hindi, Marathi, Gujarati, Bengali, and English theatre. It will recognise achievements in acting, direction, writing, and lifetime contributions to Indian theatre.
Why The Drama Utsav Mumbai 2026 Matters
Today, streaming platforms dominate entertainment. Even so, live theatre continues to offer a unique emotional connection between performers and audiences.
By bringing together theatre legends, emerging artists, educational programmes, and industry recognition, The Drama Utsav Mumbai 2026 could transform India’s theatre landscape. If successful, it may become the annual cultural festival that theatre lovers across India have been waiting for.
