Robert S. Mueller III, who was the FBI director and special counsel in charge of the high-profile investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election, died on March 20, 2026, at the age of 81. His family confirmed the news and asked for privacy while they mourn. Mueller’s death has brought back up arguments about his controversial role in looking into connections between Russia and Donald Trump’s campaign.
During his 12 years as head of the FBI, starting in 2001 under President George W. Bush, Mueller changed the agency’s focus to counterterrorism. He was respected by both parties until he was named special counsel in 2017. He charged people with interfering in the election but didn’t charge or clear Trump. His report talked about how Russia tried to help Trump win, but he didn’t have enough proof to charge anyone with conspiracy.
“Robert Mueller just died,” President Donald Trump wrote on Truth Social. I’m glad he’s dead. He can’t hurt innocent people anymore!” Critics from both sides of the aisle called the comment tasteless because Mueller had a Purple Heart from Vietnam and other awards. Trump has always reacted strongly to political opponents.
Barack Obama, the former president, called Mueller “one of the best directors in FBI history” for following the law. The FBI Agents Association praised his dedication to public service. Mueller’s death ends one of the most controversial investigations in modern politics, but his changes will last at the bureau.
