“Given that Keenu’s coming of age took place through 1947, I built a playlist around what he would realistically hear and the music that would’ve played on the radio,” Raina explained.

For Raina, music wasn’t simply background decoration. Instead, it became a way to understand Keenu’s emotions, surroundings and state of mind.
Keenu’s World Wasn’t Just Punjabi Folk

“You’d assume it was all Punjabi folk, and a lot of it was, but colonisation meant Western music had seeped in too,” Raina noted.
At the time, Western influences were reaching Indian audiences through radio and records. Therefore, Keenu’s musical world could include both traditional Punjabi sounds and international influences.
Interestingly, that contrast also reflects the larger themes of Main Vaapas Aaunga. The film is deeply rooted in Punjab, yet its characters live through a period of enormous social and cultural change.
From Frank Sinatra to Kundan Lal Saigal
Raina’s playlist crossed genres and continents.
Frank Sinatra and Bing Crosby found a place alongside legendary Indian singers Kundan Lal Saigal and Alam Lohar. Meanwhile, jazz also became part of his musical exploration.
At first, that combination might sound unusual. However, it perfectly captures the cultural crossroads of the era.
Raina also looked at how different musical traditions could work together. For that, he highlighted AR Rahman’s Ishq Mastana as a modern example.
“There’s a song in the film, ‘Ishq Mastana’, that reflects that sort of imbibed music,” Raina said.
He admired how Rahman brought Punjabi folk and jazz together. On paper, the combination may sound unexpected. Yet, on record, the two influences create something striking and seamless.
Music Helped Raina Understand Keenu
Keenu is not a straightforward character to portray.
He is young and romantic. At the same time, he is living through the enormous upheaval of Partition.
Therefore, Raina had to balance Keenu’s personal emotions with the larger historical setting. His playlist became one of the tools that helped him find that balance.
Moreover, the preparation highlights Raina’s growing maturity as an actor.
He didn’t focus only on techniques that audiences could immediately see. Instead, he worked on details that viewers might never consciously notice.
