José Caballero’s RBI single, Ryan McMahon’s two-run single, and Trent Grisham’s two-run triple that brought in McMahon and Austin Wells all helped set the tone for the second inning, which ended with five runs. In the fifth inning, Giancarlo Stanton hit a single that drove in a run, and Jazz Chisholm Jr. scored the last run on a fielding error, making the score 7-0. The Yankees had 10 hits, and they hit 4 of 11 times when there were runners in scoring position.
Giants starter Logan Webb had a tough time, giving up nine hits and six earned runs over five innings while striking out seven batters. Aaron Judge had a rough night. He went 0 for 5 with four strikeouts, which was his first Opening Day without a hit. But the team’s depth showed. Jacob Bird, Ben Headrick, and Camilo Doval came in to finish the game and only gave up one hit.
This win gives the Yankees their fifth straight Opening Day win and makes their record 1-0. Under Netflix coverage, attendance reached 40,856, showing that MLB is putting more effort into streaming.
