As the much-awaited theatrical release of Mirzapur The Movie gets closer, Ali Fazal has returned to Lucknow. However, this was more than a promotional visit. Instead, it became a personal journey into his family’s wrestling legacy.
The actor visited a traditional Akhada in Lucknow. There, he explored the world of Desi Kushti and Pehelwani. Interestingly, the experience also reminded him of the intense physical training he undertook for his return as Guddu Pandit.
His visit created a unique connection between his family history and his work on screen.
Ali Fazal Steps Into His Family’s Past
Lucknow holds a special place in Ali Fazal’s personal journey. Therefore, stepping into an Akhada carried a deeper meaning for him.
The space reminded Ali of his maternal grandfather, Ahmed Sayeed Sahab. His Nana was raised in the traditional world of Pehelwani. As a result, the visit allowed the actor to reconnect with a part of his family’s history.
Ali also reflected on what the Akhada represents. According to him, it is a place where ego takes a back seat.
“It’s the death of ego when you enter this place,” he said.
That thought is particularly interesting when linked to Guddu Pandit. The Mirzapur character is known for his physical strength, aggression and survival instincts. However, portraying him also requires immense discipline and control.
His Nana’s Pehelwani Legacy
During the visit, Ali opened up about his grandfather’s connection with wrestling. He revealed that Pehelwani was an important part of his Nana’s upbringing.
“Mere Nana ki tarbiyat Pehelwani mein hui hai,” Ali shared.
Although Ali never trained in Kushti himself, entering the Akhada created an unexpected emotional connection. Initially, he was hesitant to step inside.
“I was earlier hesitant to enter this place because I have never done Kushti before, but something pulls you back,” he explained.
Interestingly, that feeling reminded him of another combat discipline.
From Pehelwani to Jujutsu
While preparing to play Guddu Pandit again, Ali did not depend only on regular gym workouts. Instead, he incorporated Jujutsu into his preparation.
The training helped him develop functional strength. It also focused on movement, balance, technique and physical control.
Moreover, Ali found an interesting similarity between Jujutsu and the traditional Akhada environment. Both require discipline. Both demand physical commitment. Most importantly, both teach control.
“Just like how I got pulled back into Jujutsu,” Ali said while drawing a parallel between the two experiences.
For the actor, strength is clearly about more than muscle. It also involves patience, resilience and mental control.
Preparing for Guddu Pandit’s Return
Guddu Pandit remains one of Ali Fazal’s most memorable roles. Over the course of Mirzapur, the character has gone through major physical and emotional changes.
Therefore, Ali knew that returning as Guddu would require serious preparation.
This time, the actor focused on functional fitness and combat ability. Jujutsu became an important part of that process.
The training also helped him prepare for physically demanding action sequences. More importantly, it allowed him to understand how Guddu moves and fights.
Why Guddu’s Physicality Matters
Guddu Pandit is not a character who can be defined through dialogue alone. His physical presence is equally important.
His journey has been shaped by violence, betrayal and loss. Consequently, his body language needs to reflect everything he has experienced.
Ali’s preparation helps communicate that transformation on screen. His training gives Guddu a stronger physical identity.
At the same time, the actor’s experience inside the Akhada has given him another perspective on strength and discipline.
A Surprising Link Between Two Worlds
At first, Pehelwani and Jujutsu may seem completely different. One comes from India’s traditional wrestling culture. The other is a modern combat discipline that Ali used for his film preparation.
However, Ali discovered a common thread.
Both require discipline. Both demand control. And both push a person to understand their own physical limits.
Most importantly, they challenge the ego.
That is why his Lucknow visit became so meaningful. The Akhada connected Ali with his Nana’s past. Meanwhile, Jujutsu connected him with Guddu’s present.
A Glimpse Into His Nana’s Lifestyle
Ali also spoke about the traditional diet followed by his grandfather. His comments offered a glimpse into the lifestyle associated with Pehelwan culture.
Traditionally, the world of Kushti has involved strict routines and disciplined eating habits. These practices support the physical demands of wrestling.
For Ali, hearing about that lifestyle while growing up created a lasting connection to the tradition.
Now, visiting an Akhada gave those memories a more tangible form.
When Family Heritage Meets Acting
Actors often draw inspiration from personal experiences while building characters. For Ali, that connection has taken an interesting turn.
His Nana’s Pehelwani background gave him a personal link to traditional wrestling. Meanwhile, his Jujutsu training helped him prepare for Guddu Pandit.
Although the two experiences come from different worlds, they share similar values.
Discipline. Resilience. Strength. Humility.
Together, they show how personal history can unexpectedly influence an actor’s professional journey.
Ali Fazal’s Lucknow Visit Was More Than Promotion
Most celebrity promotional tours revolve around interviews, events and fan interactions. Ali’s Lucknow visit offered something different.
It allowed him to revisit his roots. At the same time, it gave him an opportunity to reflect on his preparation for one of his most demanding roles.
The Akhada became a bridge between generations.
His Nana’s Pehelwani legacy represented the past. His Jujutsu training for Guddu Pandit represents the present.
In between lies Ali’s own journey as an actor.
Mirzapur The Movie Release Date

His visit to the Lucknow Akhada brought him closer to his Nana’s Pehelwani roots. At the same time, it reminded him of the discipline behind his preparation for Guddu Pandit.
Ultimately, his story shows that strength can come from many places. Sometimes, it comes from training. Sometimes, it comes from family. And sometimes, it comes from reconnecting with where you came from.
