She gained particular recognition for originating the role of Dussie Mae in August Wilson’s Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom on stage in 1984 and 1985, before later appearing in the film adaptation.
Her film credits include appearances in The Serpent and the Rainbow, No Mercy, and Valmont, among others. While she worked extensively in both mediums, her Broadway performances remained central to her legacy as a performer.
