Aleta Mitchell, a veteran stage and screen actress best known for her roles in Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom and The Serpent and the Rainbow, has died at 74.

Mitchell, born Sharon Aleta Haskell, built a distinguished career spanning Broadway and film throughout her decades in the entertainment industry. She gained particular recognition for originating the role of Dussie Mae in August Wilson’s Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom on stage in 1984 and 1985, before later appearing in the film adaptation.

Her film credits include appearances in The Serpent and the Rainbow, No Mercy, and Valmont, among others. While she worked extensively in both mediums, her Broadway performances remained central to her legacy as a performer.

Mitchell’s passing represents the loss of a seasoned entertainer who navigated Hollywood and the New York theater scene with a career spanning multiple decades.
