Parallel Tales: A Journey Through Imagination
Isabelle Huppert and Adam Bessa in 'Parallel Tales.'

Director Asghar Farhadi is making a return to French-language filmmaking with Parallel Tales, a psychological drama that premiered at the 2026 Cannes Film Festival. The film features an impressive ensemble cast including Isabelle Huppert, Virginie Efira, Vincent Cassel, Pierre Niney, and Catherine Deneuve.

At 139 minutes, the film follows Sylvie, a novelist portrayed by Huppert, who becomes obsessed with observing her neighbors from across the street while searching for creative inspiration. Her world takes an unexpected turn when she employs Adam, played by Adam Bessa, to assist with household tasks. What unfolds is a complex web of consequences that ripples through both her fiction and reality.

The premise allows Farhadi, who earned acclaim for A Separation and The Past, to delve into familiar territory—the tension between imagination and truth. His narrative explores how the stories Sylvie invents begin to supersede the actual lives she watches, blurring the boundaries between voyeurism and creativity.

The ensemble cast and its exploration of psychological intrigue position Parallel Tales as one of Farhadi’s most anticipated recent efforts. The film will also screen at the 2026 Sydney Film Festival, expanding its reach beyond the festival circuit.
