Clarissa: A Captivating Performance by Okonedo
Clarissa

Neon’s newly acquired Clarissa, directed by siblings Arie and Chuko Esiri, transplants Virginia Woolf’s Mrs. Dalloway to modern-day Lagos in a drama that plays out over the course of one evening. Sophie Okoneko stars as Clarissa, a woman preparing to host an upscale gathering who finds herself unexpectedly confronted by ghosts of her past—old intimacies and longings she thought she’d moved beyond. By confining the story to a single night, the film digs into memory, regret, and the pivotal decisions that ultimately define a life, all while rooting Woolf’s introspective meditation in the textures of contemporary Nigerian society.

Okonedo commands the screen with a performance of quiet magnetism, relying on subtle gestures and restrained intensity to reveal Clarissa’s inner world as memories bubble to the surface and former friendships unravel. The supporting cast—David Oyelowo, Ayo Edebiri, India Amarteifio, and Toheeb Jimoh—brings considerable emotional heft, transforming reunion scenes into tense, fraught reckonings between people bound by shared history. The Esiri brothers strike a careful balance between honoring their source material and reinventing it boldly, maintaining Woolf’s preoccupation with time and consciousness while allowing Lagos’s visual language and social dynamics to reshape the narrative entirely.

Cinematography and score work in concert to amplify the film’s bittersweet register. Intimate framing and a haunting musical backdrop emphasize both Clarissa’s wistful nostalgia and the social hierarchies she must navigate. What emerges is a visually striking, emotionally intelligent drama that will likely divide Woolf scholars and captivate audiences encountering the material fresh. With its festival premiere and Neon’s distribution deal, Clarissa appears poised for awards-season consideration and marks a significant leap forward for the Esiri brothers.
