Despite mixed reviews, the Super Mario Galaxy Movie is breaking records at the global box office and for animated franchises.
During its opening weekend, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie made $372.5 million around the world. This was Universal’s fifth-biggest global launch in 113 years. The Illumination-Nintendo sequel came out on April 1, 2026, and made $190 million in the US and $182.4 million around the world in just five days. This means that it is the first animated show to have two movies that made more than $350 million worldwide.
As of early April 2026, the total was $463 million worldwide, which was more than the $110 million budget. This made it the second-highest-grossing movie of 2026 and the highest-grossing animated movie. The movie made $257 million in the US and $207 million in other countries. It is expected to reach close to $450 million soon.
Critics gave it a 42% Rotten Tomatoes score and called it “rock-stupid,” but audiences gave it an 89% score, which helped it do well with families. Mario, Peach, and Yoshi’s space adventure in the movie is still doing well in theaters.
