Remembering Anthony Head, the beloved Rupert Giles from Buffy the Vampire Slayer, who passed away at 72 surrounded by family.
Head’s death has sent shockwaves through the entertainment industry, prompting an immediate flood of tributes from the cast and crew who worked alongside him during his four-decade career in television, theater, and film.
“He was the best of us,” Sarah Michelle Gellar, who played Buffy herself, wrote in a social media tribute. The actress reflected on Head’s role not just as a co-star but as a grounding presence on set—the kind of mentor figure he also played on screen.
James Marsters, who portrayed Spike across the show’s seven seasons, called Head one of the finest actors he’d ever worked with. “He was kindness personified,” Marsters said, remembering Head’s professionalism and generosity both on and off camera.
Fellow cast members David Boreanaz and Clare Kramer also shared their memories, each highlighting Head’s talent and the warmth he brought to the Buffy set and beyond.
Before becoming Giles, Head had already built a successful career in British television and commercials. But it was his role as the glasses-wearing Watcher that gave him international recognition and introduced him to millions of fans worldwide.
In recent years, he introduced himself to a new generation through Ted Lasso, where he played Rupert Mannion. He also appeared in Doctor Who, Merlin, and Little Britain.
Those who knew Head describe him as a consummate professional with genuine warmth and humility—qualities that seemed to shine through in every role he took on.
